The Winterhaven Hotel has a lot going for it, starting with their excellent staff. The hotel’s location cannot be beat. It’s on a quieter part of Ocean Drive, directly across from the beach, and within easy walking distance to all the action. The hotel’s front porch is a fun place to relax, watch the street, eat breakfast or enjoy a drink. Our room was small but workable, and the furniture, for the most part, was nice. Very comfortable bed and good shower. Wifi worked great and the room had a new television set. Good breakfast selections. Nice little bar. Valet parking was offered to us but we chose to self-park in the nearby municipal lot on 13th Street (very close to the hotel and more convenient for us, at a cost of $20 for 24 hours).
Now for the downside. There is only one tiny, creaky elevator in the hotel. No coffee machines in the rooms. The hallways are kind of gloomy and the room had a faint, musty odor. The bathroom had practically no light!! It was impossible to do my hair or makeup in the bathroom as the ONLY light in the room was in the shower stall. Besides that, there was no shelf or area to set toiletries down. The bathroom had a very large mirror and an attached magnifying mirror but what good are those mirrors if there’s no light in the room? Finally, the construction noise was quite loud. Luckily we weren’t around much during the day to hear it.
Would we stay there again? Well I expect that by the time we get around to our next visit to South Beach, the renovations will be completed. We loved many things about the hotel and like I said at the start, the staff, especially Raul and Ana F, were exceptionally helpful, courteous and friendly. This is a place that really seems to care about their guests and their hotel. Also, the price is pretty reasonable for South Beach. So yes, I think we’d go back.
