“Cheap, cheerful & comfy - but a few big issues”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

The first thing to understand about the Whitelaw is: this is a YOUNG person's hotel, oriented towards SoBe partygoers. Its website makes this fairly clear, but it's worth restating. I would NOT recommend this place for older travellers or those with young children.

The location is unbeatable - 1min walk from beach & Ocean Drive, Collins St shopping on the doorstep.

But a warning: the lobby bar plays very loud music until very early every day, & the walls are very thin (at least, the room's door lets in a lot of noise). I highly recommend you DO NOT STAY ON LEVEL 1 as this is virtually in the bar's hallway - I can't imagine how loud those rooms must be. We were on level 2 & our aircon drowned out most of the noise so for us it wasn't really a problem but beware there are noise issues. A bigger problem for us was that we could clearly hear everyone in the hallway through our door (we were near an elevator), and I think if the place had been busier that would have been a big problem with people coming & going at night. One night our neighbour had a huge domestic, and we had to listen to them screaming at each other for about an hour. Nice.

Our room was clean & cheerfully decorated, although some might find the "trendy brothel" decor off-putting. There was a well stocked mini bar at very reasonable prices. Our king sized bed was AMAZINGLY comfortable, really great linens & pillows. The towels, on the other hand, were a bit shabby.

A major disappointment was the shower which for some reason frequently refused to spray anything other than lukewarm water. We complained & were told a plumber was working on the problem, but it never got fixed & we had lukewarm showers for the rest of our stay. A bit of a disappointment, not least because the Whitelaw's website actually specifies "hot water" as one of their specialties! (ie: "clean sheets, hot water, stiff drinks" - hmm!)

We were very pleased with the free airport shuttle service.

Give the free nightly happy hour a miss - the drinks might be free but they're crap.

Overall: location is a winner, bed comfy, shower dodgy. 2 out of 3 ain't bad?

Room Tip: Go for level 3 if you can, it's the furthest from the ground floor bar. Don't stay on level...

SystemE,

I would like to thank you for staying with us in January and for taking the time to write a review about your experience. Our hotel does have a party vibe and is on a busy street where there is a lot happening on South Beach, therefore it is a busier and noisier hotel. It is also located steps away from the beach, stores and amazing restaurants. However, as you pointed out in your review you can request a room in a quieter side of our hotel, as long as a room is available. We also have many other hotels that can meet your needs.

I am glad to hear you enjoyed your King size bed and the super comfy goose down bedding. We aim high in providing comfort to our guest. I am sorry to hear about your experience with our towels and I am currently looking into your concern. We try our best to keep our prices at a minimal so that our guest can have a truly enjoy all the room has to offer. I am happy you were satisfied with our mini bar prices.

On behalf of myself and our staff, I would like to apologize for not being able to fix the issue you experienced with your shower. Our staff worked hard to fix the issue which was beyond our control, however it took longer to fix than anticipated. Besides this issue I hope that we were able to provide you with a great stay and amazing amenities. We look forward to seeing you again.

Thank you,

Steven Morales

“Horrible”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2012 via mobile

There is NO HOT water in our room and they cant to anything.
The matrassse is too short for my 180 cm husband.
The most noisy hotel i ever saw,i can hear everything.the staff is shouting next to my door. The elevator is terribly slow and noisy. We had to chamge our room because they put us next to that fking elevator. Maybe i can suggest this hotel if u r drunk 24 hours of 24.but hot water?i dont think its a verybig expectation.

“Great weekend getaway!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 January 2012

I stayed at the Whitelaw, or as we called it, Club Dub (W), with a few girlfriends over MLK weekend. We had a wonderful experience. The staff was very attentive to our needs. At check-in, we experienced a minor set-back as maintanace on the lighting fixture in the bathroom had not been completed when we arrived in the room. It was quickly taken care of and handled appropriately by the staff. A few minutes of our patience at check-in would be my only complaint of the trip, and a minor one at best. Happy hour was a nice perk and the DJ was super friendly and took song requests. A great way to start the evening, not to mention watching NFL playoffs on the big screen behind the bar! The location is excellent, close to the beach, but just far enough away from the hustle of Ocean Dr. I would certainly come back to the Whitelaw for a future trip to MIA.

Room Tip: Wouldn't recommend a room on the first floor.

“Human contact on the phone?”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 January 2012

Today is Monday January 16, 2012. It is 2:09pm in Florida. I have been on hold for more than 15 minutes trying to talk to the hotel operator. In desperation I tried every other extension available and NO ONE answers, not even reservations and there is no possibility to leave a message. I have now been on hold at the reservations extension another 10 minutes and still no one. To make reservations I am directed to a website. Why can't I just talk to someone? Unbelievable! So don't try to call a human being because they don't exist at this hotel.
PS-I didn't travel to this hotel, I just desperately need information and NOTHING!

I stayed 4 night in whitelaw hotel in agoust 2011. After 15 days of car drive throw Florida (3.000 km) Ibooked with booking with a Good price, so my judge is good. Because the location is perfect to enjoy Miami without rush and rumors that you have in Ocean Drive. Rooms are not so big but nice, new and confortable. Staff people was ready to help me in Find a free park for my car that I did not need Here. I know Miami quite good and I preferre to save money from Hotel and spend for dinner and nightlife, so this hotel is ok. If you are rich, don't worry, you can stay here aniway. You will not fell you depressed.... Whitelaw is not Delano but is really nice.
