This hotel is overrated. If you want to have a good night’s sleep don't stay here. At times I felt like I was in the movie "My Cousin Vinny." The room walls are too thin, so that you can hear everything in the surrounding rooms. In the room on our left the person had a hacking cough. At times I thought that they were sleeping in our room the cough was so loud. In the room across the hall the TV was blasting. In addition, the air conditioner in our room sounded like a plane engine when turned on. We literally had to adjust the volume on the TV in our room when the AC came on just to be able to hear the television. Also, the bathroom is so small that when on the toilet you need to sit on an angle, so that the bathroom door doesn't bang into your knee. Any possible perks associated with staying here (location, classic architecture, nice hotel lobby and room design) are completely outweighed by the lack of basic necessities required in a hotel stay.

Well, my research paid off, I was following the reviews on here for over 9 months before we booked through Thomas cook, they offered the best prices for our 2 day stay. Essex house was ideal, a real gem, we could not have wished for anything better. From our arrival to our daily complimentary coffee before we headed out to Breakfast to 11th street diner. This hotel is spotless, not a speck of dust to be found, the rooms are spacious, clean with ample towels and toiletries I am a stickler for cleanliness and this lived up to all the great reviews, it deserves every positive comment it receives. I can not say enough positive comments. We had two rooms and both were in the Deco style as shown in all the photos. Complimentary wine and beer served in the bar every evening or soft drinks. Like any hotel, there might be a bit of noise from some inconsiderate guests, but that is just the way it is sometimes. The corridors are a bit dark, but you know what, its in the Art deco style with the original lift for guests use, small but it did the job. I looked at plenty of hotels and it goes back to the old saying, you get what you pay for and its true. Some in the same are were cheaper by maybe $30.00 a night, but we were well happy with our choice.You will not have any bad comments if you take into account the hotel is a true reflection of Art Deco interiors and style, embrace it for what it is. You will love it................
