My family & I just returned from what was supposed to be a 7 day/6 night vacation to Marco Island. It was my husband & I & our 2 children (ages 2 &6). We had booked our trip through our vacation club, GLOBAL CONNECTIONS (members beware!!) 3 months prior. We did not know we were staying in room # 506 until we got there. We left after our 4th day and drove home early. That's how bad this place was. SO sad considering Marco is such a beautiful place. Please read below if you are thinking about booking The Apollo, room #506:
After arriving to the island & seeing all the beautiful high-rise condos, I was disappointed to pull into the parking lot of The Apollo as it looked like the oldest building on Collier Blvd (beachside). Quite rundown on the outside...but ok, the inside might be beautiful, right? No.
When we stepped into our room, #506, I was amazed that people are actually booking this place. Not only was it super small (certainly smaller than what our travel agent said it was), the room has not been updated since probably the 1980's. I can deal with a cute beach condo that has old, rustic furniture, but this place was disgusting.
Bedroom: The carpet in the small 1 bedroom was old, worn & filthy. There was barely room to put our 1 suitcase (& we had 2!). The mattress on the bed was SO hard and uncomfortable, I woke up every morning with a terribly sore back...must have been at least 25 years old (can you imagine how many bed bugs have invaded that thing!?). The pillows were just as old. See my picture. I found this almost hilarious as pillows are not expensive to replace and yet here were 2 flattened pillows probably used by 100's and never washed. The sheets were maybe 50 thread count and 10 years old. There was a blanket held up by tape, being used as the blinds for the window. An old plasma tv sat on the dresser that was smaller than an iPad..maybe 7 years old but you could not see the picture unless you were faced directly in front of it.
Bathroom: SMALL. small counter top..no room to put a blow dryer, makeup, etc. Crowded if you have more than 1 person in there. The bathtub had rust and there was a gross rug that sat below the tub that I would not step on barefoot for the life of me. Shower curtain & rod fell down every time we took a shower.
Kitchen: What kitchen?! There is a tiny fridge and a tiny stove that are basically set on one side of the wall in the living/dining room. No room to cook and no counter space to put extra things.
Living space: Had an old, 2 person couch that was dirty and had a pull-out mattress. The pullout mattress had NO SHEETS or extra linens. It was broken & sagged on one side (see pics). All you could feel were coils and springs. My poor daughter had to sleep on this 4 nights. The couch was in such bad condition that you couldn't give it away if you tried. The hanging blinds were missing pieces and some were chipped or broken and all very dirty. There was an old tv that was missing the power button, so you could not turn it on except when you used the remote (which did not have batteries, so we had to buy some!). You ask, who needs a tv on Marco, right?....when you have 2 small children you do!
We brought the pack & play for our son and had to move furniture around so we could fit it in our room (ended up squeezing it behind the kitchen table). This room is def. not meant for more than 2 people and def not meant for small children. On top of my things & our beach stuff, there was almost NO room for the kids things. We ended up storing things on the back porch because we were out of room. It was so frustrating.
Patio: The view was beautiful. It really was, but it is hard to sit outside and enjoy yourself on small, uncomfortable patio furniture that has mold on the cushions.
On top of it all, they expect you to bring and stock EVERYTHING you will need on your stay..garbage bags, toilet paper, napkins, paper towels, dish soap etc. They leave NOTHING for you to start with. They make you use a key to get anywhere! ...into the building, to go up the elevator, to get into the pool, on to the beach - everywhere! AND they make you wear bracelets when swimming in the pool so they know you are a member of The Apollo. Sounds minute, but when you go from room to beach to pool & have to remember everything for yourself & 2 kids, the last thing you want to think about is remembering to bring your rubber bracelets so you can swim! They do not allow you to swim after dusk which I do not understand. They have this nice, lit up pool at night that no one can use.
We were so saddened by this experience - mostly because we promised our kids a vacation and then had to deal with all of this. But had it not been for our kids, I would not have stayed here one night. I'm surprised we made it four. I felt so dirty the whole time I was in the condo - it was a horrible feeling. I'm sure that some of the rooms in The Apollo have been updated and are nice & clean, but #506 was beyond a nightmare.
I hope that this review helps prevent a couple and/or family experience what my family and I had to go through. It is not fun to spend 6 hours in the car with impatient children, waste gas, etc only to arrive at a place that you would not leave your dog to stay in.
Room Tip: Do not stay in Apollo #506!!
