“4 stars are you kidding?”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 June 2009

It has taken me a while to write this because I usually let this stuff go but-it is only right to save someone else from a bad experience. The room was as nasty as anything I have ever been exposed to. The bath was rusty and dirty and there was no soap, shampoo, or any amenities. The staff was nice but that did not help me sleep there. There was an emergency and electricity was lost and there was all kinds of noise. The staff got together and sat up by candlelight and made plenty of noise. It was like they were in our room. In the morning breakfast was (nothing) coffee was left over from days earlier and dried to the bottom of an old Mr. Coffee. I was okay with that because I couldn't wait to get out of there. I have stayed many times throughout Europe and only a nasty youth hosil could compare to this. I did complain and was given $20.00 off of my $89.00 room.

“YIKES!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 April 2009

Okay, I wish I had something better to report. The staff was friendly ... very familial. The rooms ... not so much. They were VERY small and shoddily furnished. You can only operate under the guise of "renovating" for so long ... Since this was my first time there, I will hope upon hope that what it used to be is a far cry from where it is now, because if not ... I was shuffled around twice. The owner overbooked the b&b and started the mad customer scramble to find a place to put the overbooked party ... guess who got the boot! WILL NEVER STAY AGAIN ..... Have to end on a positive ,... uh ... let's see ... did I mention the staff was nice? Oh, I did? Then in the words of the most eloquent Forest Gump, "that's all I have to say about that"

“now called THE LUCERNE HOTEL & SUITES”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 August 2008

Frederick, who answered my questions explained "European style" meant that the bathrooms were shared with only one other room and if I liked, he could put me in a room where the "adjoining" room was empty. I agreed after he told me they had recently renovated and I saw how pretty the rooms looked on his NEW site [--]. It was VERY DECEIVING!! He also gave me a "deal" of $72.00 p/night which sounded great.

The staff there was friendly and pleasant and the lobby was small but very quaint. However, when escorted down the dark dingy hall to the room, I was sorely disappointed. The room was dark, dingy, musty smelling, and so small that the double bed took up the entire space. The color on the TV never worked properly and the picture was either purple or red. There was only ONE light bulb in the overhead light/ceiling fan and there was no adequate security lock on the room door. What they had, fell out of the stucco wall and onto the floor when I tried to check it. Other than Fredrick, the rest of the staff seemed to be people down on their luck or homeless that were working there for room and board and although pleasant enough, I had my food STOLEN from the communal kitchen's refrigerator even though it had been carefully bagged and marked with my room number as instructed by staff. I NEVER saw any continental breakfast which was part of the deal either. Maybe they ate it too. On my way out, another staff member had tried to charge me $30 extra for breaking the "security lock" in my room, and I was charged $10 for loosing the room key. The bathroom was probably the only room that was really clean, bright and cheerful except on the last day. There was this nasty questionable gunk on the bathroom wall across from the toilet...gross! I would only recommend staying here if you want a good place to get depressed or plan on doing yourself in. Otherwise, skip it and find another place. I know they will never see me there again! There is NOTHING European about this place and I have traveled extensively in Europe. Europeans are meticulous, pristine and scrupulously decorate their inns. I suspect that the 5star reviews on their hotel were made my staff! Don’t stay here.

  • Liked — The cast of characters were colorful to say the LEAST!
  • Disliked — The room, ameneties and services were as scary as a bad

“Hidden Gem near West Palm Beach”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 April 2008

This hidden gem is worth visiting if you are looking for budget accomodation in West Palm Beach region! Recently purchased and being lovingly restored by Winston, my room was a double with a new unbelievably comfortable bed, private bath, TV that worked, crisp linens and thick, fluffy new towels. This is not a cookie cutter hotel - it is being restored in the tradition of the era in which it was built - 1920s! Kitsch galore, lovely vintage furniture, small and simple rooms, artwork and old world charm. Also available, singles with shared bathrooms for true budget travellers! Availablity of the kitchen to cook and share life stories and food with Winston, his wonderful mother and Jodi made this a home I will return to and will not hesitate to recommend to others. If you are looking for bright and shiny - this is not it. If you are looking for warm and personal, you have found it!

“Exceptional value!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 February 2008

A recent stay in the Lake Worth area brought me to the Hummingbird Hotel. The hotel is exceptional, a fantastic value in a great location. Everything you need is within walking distance - the great Lake Worth downtown activities, the beach, shops.
During my stay I had the opportunity to chat with the hotel owner, Winston, several times. He and his wife demonstrate the type of old school, Customer service you rarely experience in larger hotels. The hotel has a lot of history - once a favorite haunt of Al Capone!
The rooms are very quiet and extremely clean. All in all, a great value. I'll be back!!
