This place has good and bad points.
Let's start with the good:
Overall location is in Marathon on Coco Plum Beach, 10 minutes from a good K Mart and a Publix store. So no problem for amenities. There are also a good number of restaurants and fast food in the area. You are 1 hour 20 minutes from Key West and 2 hours from Miami.
A couple of miles up the road is Curry Hammock State Park, which is a nice place to visit. You can fish there, or try one of the bridges. The Marathon Lady is two miles the other way, nice fishing boat for $50 p/p.
The actual property is situated on Coco Plum Beach. This is an Atlantic beach which means it's not like a Caribbean, calm beach, good for swimming or wading. We didn't see anyone swimming there. The beach is a few feet deep, but a reasonable length. If the wind is blowing the wrong way, you will get all kinds of garbage and huge piles of sea weed on the beach. If this happens, the beach is unusable. They do clean it up better than some of the neighbouring places, but while the wind is blowing the beach is not nice. When it's calm, the beach is ok for sand castles. We, however, did not use the beach during our stay, so maybe this tells you that it's not a selling point.
The pool area is pretty good, just a basic pool, but clean and not cold. The hot tub is very hot.
The reception staff are friendly and helpful, not so sure about the rest of the crew. The management is the biggest problem here.
If you stay in a Marriott, Hilton or other chain property, they have standards that they more-or-less adhere to. These pertain to things like regular maintenance, updating, and so on.
These DO NOT apply at Coco Plum. A couple of the units were collapsing and were out-of-use. The rest of the units are stuck c. 1982, badly outdated and in need of complete redesign. The bathrooms were TINY, like on a cruise ship, the kitchens are small, lots of damaged, chipped trim throughout, OLD carpet, TVs from the 1980s, a VCR (!), and the place smells musty. The smelliness is because the property hasn't been updated in 25 years, but for some reason they try to blame this on renters, and there are all kinds of crazy warnings - if you store bait in the freezer, they will eject you immediately and charge you $100, if you fillet fish on the property they will eject you and charge you $100, if you don't dispose of your fish way across the street they will eject you and charge you $100, and so on. Other crazy warnings included a notice on the dishwasher soap bottle saying 'You will be charged $10 if you remove this'. What? People are paying $2000/week to stay here, just notify them 'Please do not remove' and that's enough, no need to treat people like children.
With the exception of the beachfront units, the hexagonal shape, and layout of the units means you are very badly overlooked. If you want to get changed you better draw the curtains, because you can bet someone can see you.
Last thing is the beachfront units, these are the reason I give this place 3* rather than 2*. I would consider these worth renting. The others are not. The beachfronts have a new kitchen, LCD TVs (very cheap ones) plus Comcast cable box, and most importantly, when you sit in your living room, instead of a view of nothing, or someone else's unit, you get a beautiful sea view (and it is beautiful, even if the beach is not great).
With regard to unit type,
Key Lime and Tropical Island are the SAME, Key Lime is not worth more than Tropical Island. A couple of the Palm Court units are better (those in the middle), as you also get a sea view, but these are not updated and they will not guarantee a specific unit.
So, that leaves ONLY Beach Front. These cost the most but they are the only ones worth staying in. When considering Coco Plum, establish whether Beach Front is available. If not, go elsewhere, just stay somewhere else, it's not worth it. If it is available, consider the price, considering that it can cost upwards of $3000/week to stay in these, maybe you can find better for your money. However, do note that the Beach Front are VERY close to the sea, and you will find it tough to find such a nice view in other places
It's a kind of a shame about this place, the owner must be making a fortune by not maintaining - there could be a really great resort here.
Room Tip: If you can't get, or can't afford, a Beach Front unit, DO NOT STAY AT COCO PLUM
