I've been holding back on this review for many years, not wanting to give away my favorite little spot, but here goes.
First, understand that the Days Inn is really 2 hotels. The first is a set of traditional ground level hotel rooms near the highway. While I have not stayed in one of these units, other reviews have been fairly poor. The second is a relatively new 4 story oceanfront block of suites and smaller rooms and this is where I can shed more light.
The oceanfront high rise is right on the ocean with eight suites facing out and eight side facing rooms without a kitchen and dining room. I always stay in the suites because of the view - which is absolutely amazing.
The hotel is, I think, still the best value when compared to other options - The Cheeca Lodge, Chesapeake, Holiday Isle, etc...High season suite rates are around $249 and compared with others this is far less - in some cases hundreds less than the competition. You do, however, get what you pay for.
In general, the hotel needs some updating. It's really nothing fancy, from the cheap plastic beach chairs on the porch to the old tube TV sets, sofa beds that are about impossible to sleep on, etc.....The units are clean and well cared for, but as I said, rough around the edges.
The top floor suites are called the Presidential suites and they will generally run you $20-40 more per night than the lower floors. The premium suites are just not worth the extra money, as the only difference is "cool" rattan furniture. Same plastic porch chairs, one with a big screen (tube) television and another 12 feet of elevation - that's it.
For me, however, its all about the view and despite what others might complain about, I love the place. The third floor is perfect with sunrise views that start with a beautiful crimson line across the horizon and spread to amazing colors as the sun comes up. No sunset views here, but that's why you need to go to the Lor-el-ei each night for some great like music and a cheeseburger in paradise!
The lower 2 floors are identical in layout but, they have a somewhat blocked view because of the palm trees growing up in front.
There is a "beach" however, its really not much of one, as the Keys are all coral. Quite small horseshoe shaped spot where you can swim except at low tide when there's not much water available.
There is also a watersports venue right there who can rent boats, jet skis and kayaks. If you are a boater, don't rent here, rather Google Bump n Jump Boat Rentals. They have much better equipment MUCH better prices and keep their boats at Bud n Mary's a few miles away - if just for 2, their 19 footer is a great deal and really handles well.
One thing I would recommend especially for those with limited boating skill/ knowledge is the sunset jet ski tour. It's not cheap, but they take you our for a great 90 minute (I think) tour around Islamorada - very safe and fun and if riding with 2 people, not crazy expensive.
Well that's about it. Bottom line, its not the Ritz but it's affordable and a beautiful location. If you have the coin and are looking for spa services, then go to the Cheeca - for the rest of us 99 percenters, this place is great. Oh and don't miss Lazy Days for the freshest seafood on the planet - try the snapper (or whatever is fresh that day) "Lazy Days" style - melts in your mouth like candy!
Room Tip: Third floor suites are the best combination of unobstructed view and value. ONLY stay at the oceanfr...
