Pros & cons
Pros- they are lucky their property is on a beach,
Cons- hotel is unkempt, poor/rude management, insect problem (for a more detailed & lengthy encounter read below)
I booked a 2 night stay at lookout lodge resort in Islamorada for my wife & myself for our anniversary. We live in Ft Lauderdale & chose the keys because my wife is 8 months pregnant & did not want to be too far from home. We also decided to bring our dogs which limited our options on places to stay. We arrived to the resort & were checked into room 106, the place is run down & not spic & span but we were not expecting it to be a glamorous resort so we settled in & made our self comfortable. Room was very humid & full of mosquitoes but again we overlooked it & turned up AC & tried to keep an open mind although for the price of $200 a night accommodations should have been better. We enjoyed the beach next door to hotel with our dogs & went for dinner & came home to settle in. As I’m laying in bed with my wife a large flying cockroach landed on me, I killed the cockroach & could not contact the office at that time because they only have staff there from 9-9. We then had a sleepless night with the lights on uneasy that there may be other lingering critters. The next morning we were up early but had to wait for staff to arrive to complain about cleanliness & insect issue, we packed up our belongings & went for breakfast. When we came back we went to office to discuss, rather than being apologetic we were told that maybe we left the door open because they don’t have bugs in their hotel. They were unfriendly & offered to have someone spray our room but with my pregnant wife & pets we were not going to stay in a chemical filled room. They did not have a manager on staff able to make a final decision so they asked us to return in a few mins with a decision on how to handle this situation. We were also told we signed & contract & no refunds were to be issued. We took off the weekend & I was trying to keep my wife’s stress level down so we again tried to make best of it put our bathing suits & went to beach. I returned to office & they said they contacted manager & would be able to offer us a refund for 2nd night or “upgrade” our room to 105. We asked if we can see the room & they said it just had to be cleaned 1st & they would come get us on beach when it was ready. They came & got us & although we snickered to ourselves how the same size room was considered an upgrade we accepted their offer along with some coupons to local restaurant. Room seemed a lot cleaner than 1s t& did not have same mosquito issue so we made best of it & again tried to just enjoy our weekend away from home. We showered had lunch and returned to room, my wife goes to use restroom & toilet starts to overflow. I grabbed plunger next to toilet & my wife called front desk to alert them of mess. No one answered so she walked over, young lady at front desk offered her a plunger as a resolution. My wife said to her my husband has plunger & is working on fixing it now but for what we are spending here a night do you really think I should be the one fixing your toilet especially after all the headache we have already had. She called manager (her father) & told us that she would call PJ to come over & fix it. My wife returned to room & I continued working on toilet to fix. I fixed it however the bathroom was now filled with water, & master carpet soaked. My wife returned to front desk to inform receptionist & she said I have a guy coming to fix & clean… my wife told her its fixed & explained how ridiculous it was that we had to fix it our self & that she had reached her limit of stress in this hotel & would be leaving. It took us a half hr to 45 mins to pack up in which no one came rushing to our room & water kept spreading. Of course there is no manager on staff to rectify situation then & there so we were told to call back following day to speak to manager Donald. My wife cannot/should not be stressed like this while she is pregnant & we had to unfortunately decided to cut our trip short & drive back to ft Lauderdale. We imagined the owner Donald would be more sympathetic & or concerned about the satisfaction of his customers & refund our 2nd night stay seeing that we had tried to make the best of it. Speaking to him was exactly the opposite, he did not take any responsibility for any of the issues & said his hotel does not have bug or plumbing issues & that we were “Problem” people. He was very rude entire time he spoke to me .He refused any form of discount or refund & we told him that we would be disputing charges; he said we were welcome to & hung up on me.
This hotel obviously will not be expecting our business again & we advise you to go elsewhere for relaxation!

Some guests you just cannot please. Our Guest Relations staff tried eveything to please this couple including offering them a refund for their 1st nights stay or upgrading to a full suite even though we found no evidence of a problem in the Mini-Suite.
They chose to upgrade at the same rate and then they were surprised that they were charged for the room?
They say that attitude is everything. As we are a small property, we had to call in staff after hours to deal with a bathroom issue caused by the guest in the evening.
A tip for travelers, asking nicely gets you a lot more at small lodging estabishments then huffing and puffing or threating a staff member.
This property is keeped up and clean. Whe have found that accusations like this tend to be from a guest that wants a free vacation.
