“Great Location but Noisy”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 May 2012

We have vacationed in Key West many times over the past 20+ years, but this was our first stay at Cypress House. It has been interesting to read the "before and after management change" comparisons by recent reviewers because we found ourselves at Cypress House as a result of an ownership change in the B&B where we had previously stayed. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit. Our room was spacious, bright, and recently refurbished. Its location relative to Old Town is hard to beat, but it was also the noisiest place we've ever stayed in KW. Much of the noise could be attributed to a busy street corner location, but we also had quite a bit of noise from surrounding rooms. The new owners are doing a good bit of construction work during the day, but this really wasn't an issue or inconvenience.

Despite comments in recent reviews, we found the evening Happy Hour to be enjoyable. The cocktails, hot dips and finger foods were good. We've never expected our B&B to provide an extensive spread, and we had no reason to expect Cypress House to do so. Breakfast, on the other hand, was adequate but disappointing. The mixed fruit was identical every morning and obviously a commercial pre-bagged product. The only word to describe the orange juice was "nasty" - if it wasn't canned, it was an excellent imitation of canned juice. In Florida, serving that should have been illegal. No pastries or goodies were offered for those of us whose sweet tooth demands a regular feeding.

The staff was congenial and helpful with any questions, but, other than Richard and Eli, we found them to be quite aloof. In many ways, it reminded us of a hotel staff who have been discouraged from intermingling with guests. Unfortunately that type of friendly interaction is one of the primary reasons we prefer B&B's to hotels, and we missed not having that relationship.

Room Tip: Room 8 is large and bright if you don't mind a couple flights of stairs.

“Location”

What I liked: Location, location, location, The Cypress House is close to all our favorites, Half Shell Raw Bar, Pepe's, and everything on Duval Street. We stayed in Room #1 and had an excellent porch to hang and relax on. We got to the Happy Hour late, our own fault, what was left was good. Breakfast was okay, was a little taken back by commercial cereal bowls to eat from.

Be aware parking is 4 blocks away, I was not aware of this until we checked in, perhaps my own fault for not reading on their website. I don't know if it mentions it there or not. Also you pay the Cypress House for parking, not the parking garage.

What I didn't like: no iron, no ironing board, no luggage rack (I hate playing musical chairs with my luggage on the bed or working from the floor), no hair dryer, no vanity mirror, no coffee maker in the room. Also Room #1 is right on the corner of Simonton & Caroline, we heard every moped, motorcycle, pedestrian conversation, car, and regaton music during the night that passed by the room. Further, early in the morning all the commercial trucks delivering to bars and restaurants on Duval passed by. We did not get a good nights rest.

If $200 a night is the going rate for a great location and a porch in Key West then so be it. The room was bland with not much character. I expected more from a B&B and for $200 a night.

Dear CBrown94,

Thank you for your review. Ha...I am surprised to hear that you thought honed marble in the entire bathroom, original crown molding and a beautiful, romantic chandelier in the bedroom is bland! We think it's wonderful and inviting. I am happy to see that you enjoyed the porch off your bedroom; it is a great place to people-watch. And there certainly is a lot on the streets to see.

One other thing I wanted to mention; we are not a B&B, we are a boutique hotel that does offer complementary freshly baked breads and egg dishes for breakfast poolside.

Thank you again for writing and we hope to see you again soon!

“Only the location remains the same!”

Travelled to Key West in early May with another couple for the Songwriter's Festival. Have ALWAYS stayed at the Cypress House since discovering it in early 2000s. Great location, incredible personal service and little extras that truly completed the Key West experience for us.

Started to grow concerned when we found out that Dave Taylor (general manager) was leaving in February, but was comforted by the claim that "everything will be the same". Then postings began to pop up that Happy Hour had been eliminated and that the personal touch of staff had been lost. We all made confirming phone calls and got repeated assurances that nothing had changed.

One week before our arrival, we were told by our travelling companions (not the Cypress House) that our room, reserved 5 months in advance, had been switched, and not just to a different room, but to a different PROPERTY altogether. A phone got us switched back to the main property and assurances that we would be next to our travelling companions. Upon our arrival, we found that we had been moved again.

Thankfully, Christopher (old Cypress House staff) was working upon our arrival and was able to address the room issue. But the changes were just beginning to show. The happy hour that used to be beer, wine, bar liquor and food is now a single select drink and less food. The Kentucky Derby party, which used to coincide with Happy Hour on Derby Day, is totally gone. The morning breakfast has lost the fresh breads and pastries for a mass produced, slightly better than continental breakfast.

The pool area, which had always been immaculately maintained, is now in poor appearance and the chaises that used to surround it have been replaced with all weather couches. Oh, you can still catch some sun if you would like to leave the pool area and go to the sun deck on the second level of the Simonton House, which also happens to be right outside the entry door of someone 's room and is packed full with only 4 chaises and a table.

You can certainly tell the staff difference from new to old. Christopher and Dennis worked very hard to make us comfortable, and Eli worked very hard to be accomodating. But the Cypress House is not the Cypress House of old. If you have never stayed here, you will not know what you're missing, and more than likely, you will enjoy your stay. If you have stayed at the CH previously, you will never recognize the place. Congratulations to Historic Key West Inns...another cookie cutter inn. Thank you, but I believe I'll be moving on!

Thanks for your review! We are very excited about the changes we are making to the Cypress House!

The outdated happy hour has been replaced with a nightly mix-n-mingle with appetizers and a nightly cocktail special; a perfect beginning to your evening before you head out on the town for dinner and fun. Guests are always welcome to mix up their own cocktails and be happy at any hour at the pool or sundeck! We are baking breads fresh each morning along with a daily egg dish served poolside. Our service is, as always, attentive and thoughtful.

New chaise lounges have been put onto the sundeck and we have found many guests reading, relaxing and napping in the deep seating loungers that are poolside. Sometimes the gentle breezes will push some small leaves from the lush landscaping around the pool into the pool area.

Granted, these changes may be too dramatic for some former Cypress House guests. We are happy to provide a fresh, new experience at the Cypress House and hope you will come back again soon!

I had always wanted to stay at the Cypress House and the hotel did not disappoint me. I loved the combination of the historical home with modern conveniences. The room was large and very comfortable, especially the bed with six pillows!! Breakfast was terrific. The choices included eggs mixed with potatoes, cheese and sausage and I enjoyed eating by the pool. You are conveniently located to Duval Street and the historical seaport. The service was great especially Dennis. The grounds and house are very clean. I cannot wait till my next stay at this hotel and I will recommend this to all of my friends.

“Great Location, great hotel!”

We stayed here for three nights and loved every minute. We had a little room in the property two houses over from the main house (this was a bit of a pain in the bum as we had to walk to breakfast - but not the biggest deal) our room was small but fine (bathroom a bit dated) - and we had a lovely shared patio with chairs where we could finish our coffee and surf the net. The breakfast was delish - brilliant coffee, cereal, fruit, juice, muffins... dont need much else - it is the tropics! AND they had a lovely happy hour at 6pm with a drink and snacks - perfect way to end the day or begin the evening. Tons of friendly kittlies around to pet (we love cats!) one even followed us home. The staff were friendly and we wish we could have stayed longer.

Room Tip: try to get one in the main house for easy access to pool and breakfast!
