Located at the south end of Duval Street - you are pretty much guaranteed of an adventure every time you head through the Old Town - not to mention the exercise! This a like a B&B without the breakfast. The buildings date back to the 1800's but are well kept. A private pool and garden are a great place to relax and enjoy a morning cuppa. No need for an alarm clock when you add the charm of feral chickens - a reminder of the cock fights of old.
You essentially get a clean place to lay your head for the night - for a price. While that price may seem a little high - it is a good deal when compared to similar facilities in Key West. The staff are friendly and accommodating.
Duval Street is where all the action is in the old town - takes a leisurely 30 minutes to walk up to the north end. A great collection of art galleries, bars, restaurants and shops. Whatever you eat will be worn off by the time to ankle back to Douglas House!
First visit to KW a few years ago - made a big mistake of waiting until the end of the visit to take a 90 minute tour on the Conch Train. This is an absolute must while you are in Key West....but do it at the beginning of your stay as it truly enriches the Key West experience. It is the best 90 minute investment you will make!
Every night at sundown - the buskers, magicians, acrobats and entertainers are on hand at Sunset Pier - to entertain you. This is where the cruise ships dock - there is always a lot of hubbub in this area. If you like Mohitos, there is a little bar on the pier that makes the best drinks on the planet - tips included in the price!
Don't miss Mel Fisher's Treasure Museum while you are there - a few block south of the pier, you will find this gem - housing a representative sampling of the Atocha (Spanish Galleon) treasure trove - the largest prize ever recovered. This $400 million recovery comes with a great story of perseverance and dedication. The museum is small but well worth the visit.
Check out Hemmingway's place - with the 6 toed cats.
