“Home away from home!”

My husband and I traveled to Key West for the first time and chose the Alligator and the Mermaid based on the TripAdvisor reviews. We were celebrating our "baby moon"- our last getaway before our daughter arrives later this spring. From the first encounter on the phone with Gerri, we knew this would be a memorable trip.

I'm sure there are lots of nice places to stay in Key West, but it was the small touches that really made the difference for us. We arrived well before the 2pm check-in and Gerri was there to greet us, give us directions to lunch spots and let us know that our room would be ready early. Throughout the week, she and the rest of the staff booked us dinner reservations (with EXCELLENT recommendations- we never had a bad meal our entire stay!), excursions, a fabulous drag cabaret show and even a couples massage in the garden.

The other guests were extremely friendly and the set up of the backyard made breakfast chats and afternoon wine hours even more conducive to mingling. Like I said, the small touches made it fantastic- umbrellas at the front door the day it rained, recommendations for the best trolley service, fresh baked muffins each morning.

Our room, the Royal Ponsietta, was small but comfortable. The private porch with loungers and a screening of palms made it seem much larger and we spent a good chunk of time just relaxing with the island breezes.

The dogs really are the stars of this place- Havanna and Caya are the sweetest flat-coat retrievers and we really enjoyed having them around. We played with them in the front yard every morning and were sad to leave them behind.

As mentioned before, the location is perfect- even being 6 months pregnant, we walked everywhere. I've noticed a few of the reviews mention that this B&B is pretty pricey, but as with most things in life- you get what you pay for. We would wholeheartedly recommend and hope to visit again soon!

Room Tip: All rooms have their own bathroom and AC units. We peeked in on most of the rooms and every one of...

“The place to stay in Paradise.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 February 2012

Our recent stay at The Mermaid and The Alligator was the best. We often travel to Key West and this was by far the best experience. We were there with two other couples. Dean and Paul are very gracious hosts. Rebecca and the staff were informative and helpful. Each room has its own bathroom which was a big plus for us. The beautifully restored Victorian home is centrally located so our group was able to walk everywhere. The backyard deck and pool were relaxing and a terrific gathering place to catch up with friends and meet new ones. I enjoyed the attention to detail and items of interest everywhere. The breakfast was worth getting up for in the morning. Wine and lemonade at 4p.m. was a great way to start the evening. The dogs, Savannah and Kai are beautiful and so well behaved. They were always willing to play if we wanted. We look forward to our next visit.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Tree Top Room. It is the largest room and is in the attic. Has its own A/C. It i...

What a FABULOUS B and B!!
My husband and I stayed for 3 nights in mid January, and this property was perfection from start to finish! The home is warm and welcoming, filled with wonderful furniture and artwork from around the world. The entire staff could not have been more friendly and helpful. The gardens are exquisite, and the wonderful plunge pool seemed to be mine alone, on 2 glorious starry evenings!
The breakfast area was very comfortable, food was excellent, the coffee was always there, and the wine in the early evening was a great treat!!!
We stayed in the very comfortable and beautiful Garden Room--LOVED the shower area!!
I really did NOT want to leave!!!
Mermaid has set the bar high for my future B and B stays anywhere!! Oh, if they could ALL be like this one!!! Thank you, Dean and Paul, for sharing this gorgeous property with us!!!

Room Tip: I thoroughly enjoyed the Garden Room! There is a sky light that I found very lovely--nighttime moon...

“Honeymoon heaven”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

We stayed here on the Key West leg of our honeymoon. We really can't recommend The Mermaid and the Alligator highly enough. From the outset we were made to feel like this was a place to relax ad de-stress. We had five nights in the Garden room which opens onto a semi private part of the wonderful garden with its many nooks and crannies it's the perfect place to curl up and read or sip a glass of wine before going out fr dinner. Speaking of which, Geri and Rebecca recommended us some amazing spots to eat, their local knowledge is invaluable. Dean and Paul were consumate professionals, friendly and welcoming without eing intrusive and their breakfasts are amazing! Our last night was in the Caribbean Queen room upstairs which has an amazing balcony complete with hammock. A fantastic room! Excellent hot tub, garden, rooms, cleanliness, atmosphere, service, mid afternoon lemonade, baking, breakfast... Couldn't recommend this place highly enough for a romantic get away.
Matt and Gail.
