My husband and I booked An Island Oasis after lots of research (and after reading several reviews on Trip Advisor). After our stay there, I have no idea why it was reviewed so positively. We stayed in several B&Bs before, but never had an experience like this.
We arrived in Key West quite early Tuesday morning, and our room was (understandably) not ready. We parked, and opted to explore the island for a few hours. The B&B was close to Duval street and a short walk to most of the tourist attractions, so we were out for quite awhile. When we got back we were able to check in. The first thing the manager did was run our credit card and billed us for the 3-day stay. Our room was on the first floor facing the street. There was one small window in the room, and we obviously couldn’t open it if we wanted any privacy. The hotel was located on a major thru-street, and it sounded like every truck, scooter, and pedestrian was in the room with us. All of the other guests had to walk by our room in order to get to theirs, so we heard people coming and going all night and through the early morning. The “new” mattress felt like a cheap, semi-inflated air mattress; my husband had back pain for two days afterwards. The bathroom was clean, but small and missing basic amenities, like soap. There was no one on duty to talk to, so we had to wait until Wednesday morning to deal with the situation.
The “continential breakfast” was served outdoors. Not a big deal normally, but FL was in the midst of a cold snap and it was barely 50 degrees in the mornings. There was no lobby or dining room where breakfast could be held. The meal consisted of cold cereal, semi-frozen muffins, iffy bagels, and juice. After this lovely meal, we discovered that it was the manager’s day off. She left someone “in charge” that couldn’t answer a single question, and gave us the manager’s phone number instead. We called and left a message at 9:30 to call us back, and set off to start our day. We stopped into other hotels and B&Bs, and found one more to our liking.
The manager called us back at 11:30ish Weds morning. Our cell reception was terrible, and it took us another few minutes to find a spot where we could hear her. I told her our concerns, and said that we were going to check out and find other accommodations. She then told us that we were going to be charged for Wednesday night’s stay, since we were trying to check out after 11:00!! I told her that had she called us back earlier, we would have cheerfully checked out before 11. She started ranting, and at that point I told her to take it up with my credit card company. We are currently disputing the charge.
There are literally dozens of nicer B&Bs in Key West, all within blocks of Duval Street. If you want to waste about $250 a night for mediocre accommodations, stay at An Island Oasis.
