“Second Stay... Pretty much the same feeling as last time...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2011

This is my second review of Cocount Grove/Oasis... And my reaction is still the same. In the ever changing island of Key West, I think that Coconut Grove remains a great option for those not wanting to stay at Island House.

Alexanders is nice, but is not exclusively men or gay, if that is what you are looking for.

Island House is fun to visit, but don't think it's the best place for me to stay.

Big Ruby's is too close to Duval.

Equator is just feeling run down, and is attracting a much older crowd.

That leaves Coconut Grove. If you have the choice, make sure and get a room in Coconut Grove. It is the most recently remodeled, and is the winner for that reason.

For anyone considering going, just know that you are not going to be at a luxury resort. The staff is not top notch, is not aggressively friendly or helpful... it's all just adequate. BUT the guys that stay there are great, you will always meet new friends, can sunbathe nude, etc. etc.

“Could not have been better...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2011

First time trip to the Coconut Grove and fell in love with the facilities and the people. We arrived Monday at lunch and were greeted warmly and given some great tips for restaurants, and then shown to our beautifully appointed room (308) by Jorge. We were both impressed by the condition of the property and the beautiful pools and lush landscaping - but knew we were in the right place when Jorge said "welcome home". Our room was extremely comfortable with a great bathroom and really comfortable bed. We were so happy and comfortable there that we almost never left the grounds except to go to one of the fantastic restaurants nearby or to go out on the town, preferring to socialize poolside with the new friends we made while we were there. It was an almost perfect week, and a great vacation. The provided breakfast and pooside happy hour were great fun too. It was hard to leave, but we've already booked for next year.

Jerrie, Jorge, Todd and Michael: Thank you! We can't wait to come visit you again!

“All good things must come to an end - did not want to leave”

My partner and I just returned from our stay at the Coconut Grove. This was our second time in two years. Once again we were not disappointed. I was looking forward to the beautiful gardens and numerous orchids. I was pleasantly surprised to see the number of flowers had climbed to over two hundred. I spent a fair amount of time meandering around the grounds to take photos of the different blooms.

The breakfast bar provided light offerings which was a nice start to our days; a contrast to the rather large portions we received when dining out for lunch and dinner at the local restaurants (there is certainly no shortage of good food in Key West).

A portion of the Oasis was being repainted and we had to be a bit more cautious while walking through the area. We understand that a beautiful old building does require constant maintenance. I personally love the old charm of the property. Far more character than a concrete and glass building.

We found the staff very helpful and the cleaning staff very efficient. I don't know when the housekeeper would have had time to clean our room but when we returned every afternoon our room was spotless and re-stocked.

I would recommend this hotel and am looking forward to the day when we can return (hopefully sooner rather than later).

“Needs New Management Badly”

I have stayed at all three Hobart properities over the last 10 yrs (Oasis, Coral Tree, Coconut Grove) and have noticed a steady decline in the facility overall. The manager who use to be jovial and friendly now just grumbles and is the most unaccomodating person in the hospitality service I have ever encountered in all of my travels. In comparasion I have also stayed previously at Island House and Alexanders on Fleming and they both are very accomodating to their guests with superior facilities

The Hobart corporation needs to put money into their properties and hire new management.

“shoulda looked harder”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 March 2010

After deciding on a trip to Key West, my partner and I looked online for some gay friendly hotel choices and stumbled onto Hobart Resorts and Coconut Grove. After reading some online reviews which detailed an extensive renovation to the property, we felt confident we'd made a decent choice. There were a few good things about Coconut Grove (housekeeping staff, location, rooftop decks); there was also a lot wrong with it...In our room #316 there were red ants by bathroom sink, cockroaches (3) in shower stall, toilet sinking into floor, we think because of termites....and when these things were mentioned, management at the desk said they had no idea the bathroom was in such bad shape, that no one had ever mentioned it....(which can't be possible the floor is soft all around the toilet bowl, and that kind of problem takes a while to get that bad)

It seems that Hobart Resorts may have at one time been a player in the gay Key West travel scene, but that was long ago....all 3 properties need major reno, the gardens need cleaning out, our pool area was in shadow constantly because of overgrowth. Mold growing along pool edge...The "lavish" continental breakfast... Lets start with a definition...

lav·ish (lvsh)
adj.
1. Characterized by or produced with extravagance and profusion: a lavish buffet.

What we were offered...not so lavish. Really a few Kelloggs cereal boxes, apples, yogurt. breads, and coffee. That ain't lavish at $250 a night. Sorry, but it ain't...

So basically...if you have to go gay in Key West, do not go to Oasis/Coconut Grove/Coral Tree Inn. Look elsewhere!!
