“Absolutely bare-bones hotel/hostel... be warned”
I stayed at the Seashell Motel with two family members in August 2011. It is a combination hostel and hotel. I booked this room for two reasons - it's the cheapest place to stay in all of Key West and it's in a good location only a few blocks from downtown and the beaches.
My quoted rate was $84.00 a night. This is the cheapest rate in Key West, but still ridiculously high. As a first-time visitor to Key West, I was surprised by the lack of affordable hotels on the island. $84.00 a night for the off-season at this hotel was way too expensive for what we got. Should have been half that price. If I had it to do over again, I would have spent the extra $20 a night to get a more modern hotel.
This is a BARE BONES hotel. It's even lower in quality than say, a Motel 6. Our room was incredibly basic/ military style. Our room had a pathetic air conditioning wall unit that was not sufficient for August in Key West. If you're looking for an absolutely no frills hotel or hostel, this is it. I noticed most of the visitors to this hotel were European.
I was pleasantly surprised at the quiet and respectful nature of the hostel. I saw lots of weary 20-somethings wandering around the place so I figured it would get rowdy at night. Not at all... our stay was very quiet. No alcohol is allowed on premises. Now, this was during the off-season. Spring break might be another story!
Also, the front desk is closed between 9 p.m. - 9 a.m. No late or early check-in or check-out. This can be inconvenient if you need extra towels or get locked out at an off hour.
A few positive notes - the area is very safe, great for biking, and central to everything in Key West. You definitely don't need a car (parking is very limited anyway, albeit free). Rent/bring a scooter or bike and you're set to explore the whole island.
