“Private Double Room a Great Value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 November 2011

I traveled to Key West with my brother for a weekend away and only found the hostel once we arrived, no reservations. We were lucky they had a private room left and it's SO much cheaper than staying in a hotel there. The motel is a couple blocks from everything, we walked to the beach and downtown with ease. The room was nice as far as hostels go, with a private bathroom, 2 beds, a closet, refrigerator and a/c. There's car parking and a keyed gate around the motel.

“nice place”

You Can't expect 5 five stars while trying traveling on a budget. This palce has a great Keys feel and staff is freindly. The courtyard area is great to sit and chit-chat with people from all over the globe. I have stayed here for years and will continue to do so. The owners continue to keep the palce nice. Just blocks from Duval Steet and Higgs Beach and Whit Steet Pier. There is a small cafe just two blocks down, "Anna's" you can get a breakfast made to order with great Cuban Coffee. I would recommend this to anyone

“Absolutely bare-bones hotel/hostel... be warned”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 August 2011

I stayed at the Seashell Motel with two family members in August 2011. It is a combination hostel and hotel. I booked this room for two reasons - it's the cheapest place to stay in all of Key West and it's in a good location only a few blocks from downtown and the beaches.

My quoted rate was $84.00 a night. This is the cheapest rate in Key West, but still ridiculously high. As a first-time visitor to Key West, I was surprised by the lack of affordable hotels on the island. $84.00 a night for the off-season at this hotel was way too expensive for what we got. Should have been half that price. If I had it to do over again, I would have spent the extra $20 a night to get a more modern hotel.

This is a BARE BONES hotel. It's even lower in quality than say, a Motel 6. Our room was incredibly basic/ military style. Our room had a pathetic air conditioning wall unit that was not sufficient for August in Key West. If you're looking for an absolutely no frills hotel or hostel, this is it. I noticed most of the visitors to this hotel were European.

I was pleasantly surprised at the quiet and respectful nature of the hostel. I saw lots of weary 20-somethings wandering around the place so I figured it would get rowdy at night. Not at all... our stay was very quiet. No alcohol is allowed on premises. Now, this was during the off-season. Spring break might be another story!

Also, the front desk is closed between 9 p.m. - 9 a.m. No late or early check-in or check-out. This can be inconvenient if you need extra towels or get locked out at an off hour.

A few positive notes - the area is very safe, great for biking, and central to everything in Key West. You definitely don't need a car (parking is very limited anyway, albeit free). Rent/bring a scooter or bike and you're set to explore the whole island.

If u want a hot, sweaty non romantic night with your wife in key west, this place is for you. The beds are awful ...springs are sticking out...you would be much better off sleeping on the tile floor. The ac does not work ...just trust me don't stay here ...it is wayyyyyyyyyy over priced!

“Misquoted - Overpriced”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 March 2011

people found this review helpful

We were given the following quote via email:

"The rates for 4 adults are as follows:
-Extended Double Rooms with two full-size beds and a single bed - $129+tax."

They later raised their price to $169 claiming the new kid that gave the quote didn't know there were 4 people (when his quote SPECIFICALLY said "for 4 adults").

For the same time period, Days Inn, Banana Bay, Lexington, Best Western, Ibis Bay, and Fairfield Inn all had better rates. For the same price (or less), you can stay in a nicer place and/or be closer to the water.

Very unprofessional and NOT worth the money!

I would only consider this place if everything else is booked. I never expect much from a bargain motel; but I usually hope that they'll at least provide professional customer service while they're trying to get my money. They could not even do that.
