“Close to the action, but yet so far from the noise.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2012

This is our second visit to Key West & a much more enjoyable experience then staying @ the Marriott resort. It is not a resort by any means, but it felt more homey and welcoming. The main reason for this was the host Derek. The atmosphere of the whole stay changed on his days off. I believe these were Tue/Wed. It was the first time I was welcomed so warmly upon an early check-in. Not only without hassle, but with a cold glass of wine after an exhausting day of travel. We were fairly familiar with the small island, and past activities. Derek still managed to steer us in the right direction on a few other excursions. Two very reasonable Cuban restaurant/take-out places were within a block or two of the inn. We had no car, and no reason to need one. Bikes are there for rental, and are only a few more $$ then in town. The bonus is you get them for 24 hrs.

The lack of a pool was not a huge factor as Fort Zachory, and the best beach in Key West is a short bike ride away. The rooms are small, and the web-site is accurate. We were rarely in our rooms, and spent the time there on the small deck area near our room. I'm not sure I would have wanted one of the front porch rooms; occasionally, guests would wait for cabs in this area. I felt like our porch was a bit more "our own."

The housekeeping service was much more friendly, and reliable than the Marriot. Maria was always on the property around the end of breakfast. So, you never felt rushed to get out of your room. The room was always returned to the state of our arrival, and I felt very secure of my belongings. Anything more you needed was only a request away.

The breakfast was adequate for the advertised continental style. It usually kept me filled until a late lunch, and I am a very active/athletic individual. My only complaint was the yogurt choices during our last few days turned to a poor generic brand with artificial ingredients. Advertised a green facility I would have liked more organic/natural choices, and a nice recycle center in the eating area.

The final reason this was a better stay was our sleep. It is not near the airport/Duval or even that many roosters! We were able to sleep with windows open on beautiful warm Key West evenings. Most guests seemed to abide by the 10 PM quiet requested of the Inn.

“The Grand is grand!”

I just got back from a week at The Grand Guesthouse. What a wonderful place--clean, quiet, and friendly staff who are always helpful but never intrusive. Upon arrival, Derek was especially kind; he mapped out the vicinity and made a list of suggestions in order to make my stay comfortable and interestingly full. I rented a suite because a friend and her daughter drove down from Miami. All needs were met--extra towels, toilet paper, make-up remover toilettes. Hair dryer, iron, ironing board, plus the suite has a kitchenette so that we could conveniently make snacks. Breakfast is good too--great coffee, and freshly baked bread-cakes, and all things "continental." And the Grand is well located, walking distance from Duval and all of my workshop locations. Thank you for my lovely stay. Five stars!

“Personal attention makes this a standout”

We arrived an hour before check in time but were not put off; instead Derek warmly welcomed us with wine and a holiday toast. He provided an informative and relaxed orientation of the inn and surrounding environs. He made my husband and I feel like we were the most important guests he'd ever greeted! I would book again just to get Derek's help and service. He was an immediate breath of fresh air after a long day in congested airports and airplanes. After asking us about our interests, he made reservations for us at our first restaurant choice- Blue Heaven, for the same night (which netted us the "Honeymoon" table), discounted tickets on a 27 mile jet ski tour, and discounted tickets for the Butterfly Museum. We are usually quite independent when making plans and reservations, but Derek's non-pushy but helpful attitude put us in a "let's let him do the work for us" mood.

Our room, defined as a suite, was as reviewers have described- pristine. It consisted of a small bedroom with small chest of wicker-finish drawers, clothes hanging rod, bathroom, and second connecting room (no door) with a couch and small kitchen area. All was as pictured on the website- certainly not the Four Seasons, but exactly what we wanted for this laid back trip. Located in a quiet neighborhood, the room itself was quiet and dark enough at night to get a good night's sleep. We had no neighbor or street noise the entire four night/five day stay.

Some Highlights: the continental breakfast went beyond the usual cereal and store-bought baked goods. It included a heavenly homemade sweet bread each day- either pumpkin, nut, or cranberry; yogurt, fresh fruit, juice, and hard boiled eggs. The whiteboard of where to eat suggestions was very helpful, especially since it was our second KW visit and we wanted to continue exploring the restaurants. It was interesting to learn what locals (inn owners and mnager) thought were the best restaurants. The on-property bikes for rent became our go-to transportation, and were a great way to get to and from Zachary Taylor State Park and Mallory Square. The shower in the bathroom was excellent- unexpectantly toasty hot and powerful spray for an older bathroom. We enjoyed meeting and talking with the other guests at the communal breakfast tables.
As we were boarding the plane four days later, I asked my husband which hotel or B &B he'd like to try on our next KW visit. He replied, why go anywhere else? I agree!

“First time guest.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 December 2011

LOved the web site and lots of positive reviews, so we booked our 4 day vacation 12/5-12/8/11. Jim and Jeff took care of us from the moment we arrived (early I must say). Our room was ready shortly afterwards and we got to meet Maria: lovely women who took good care of us and our rooms, which were pristinely clean and comfortable.. We had the suite which perfectly suited our purposes and gave us some extra space. Jim gave us directions to a wonderful Cuban restaurant for lunch...fabulous food and HUGE portions. We rented bikes for two days and explored Key West from two wheels...exhilarating and interesting. Spent one day at the beach and another sight-seeing and shopping. Lots of good food along the way. Nice kitchenette in our suite was a bonus even though we enjoyed the ample continental breakfast, then lunch and/or dinner out. Jim had wonderful suggestions for dining, directions and points of interest. Too much to do in four days so we are already planning another trip. We so highly enjoyed our stay and the staff that we have recommended The Grand Guesthouse to several other friends. Since it is several blocks away from Duval, we were in a quiet, older neighborhood-another plus. A big thank you to Jim, Jeff, Derrick and Maria for making our vacation memorable.

Room Tip: Our suite offered us two queen sized beds providing us with ample space. And because we were in the...
