This is our second visit to Key West & a much more enjoyable experience then staying @ the Marriott resort. It is not a resort by any means, but it felt more homey and welcoming. The main reason for this was the host Derek. The atmosphere of the whole stay changed on his days off. I believe these were Tue/Wed. It was the first time I was welcomed so warmly upon an early check-in. Not only without hassle, but with a cold glass of wine after an exhausting day of travel. We were fairly familiar with the small island, and past activities. Derek still managed to steer us in the right direction on a few other excursions. Two very reasonable Cuban restaurant/take-out places were within a block or two of the inn. We had no car, and no reason to need one. Bikes are there for rental, and are only a few more $$ then in town. The bonus is you get them for 24 hrs.
The lack of a pool was not a huge factor as Fort Zachory, and the best beach in Key West is a short bike ride away. The rooms are small, and the web-site is accurate. We were rarely in our rooms, and spent the time there on the small deck area near our room. I'm not sure I would have wanted one of the front porch rooms; occasionally, guests would wait for cabs in this area. I felt like our porch was a bit more "our own."
The housekeeping service was much more friendly, and reliable than the Marriot. Maria was always on the property around the end of breakfast. So, you never felt rushed to get out of your room. The room was always returned to the state of our arrival, and I felt very secure of my belongings. Anything more you needed was only a request away.
The breakfast was adequate for the advertised continental style. It usually kept me filled until a late lunch, and I am a very active/athletic individual. My only complaint was the yogurt choices during our last few days turned to a poor generic brand with artificial ingredients. Advertised a green facility I would have liked more organic/natural choices, and a nice recycle center in the eating area.
The final reason this was a better stay was our sleep. It is not near the airport/Duval or even that many roosters! We were able to sleep with windows open on beautiful warm Key West evenings. Most guests seemed to abide by the 10 PM quiet requested of the Inn.
