“What a shame”

What a shame. This property is beautiful. It has such potential. It has beautiful big trees shading the property and wonderful lush tropical foliage, a pretty beach area with all kinds of sea life and beach chairs, a hammock, and swings that I fell asleep in. It has a dock in which you can sit and see the sunsets each day. The location is excellent close to shopping, and fine dining. There is a nice shady bike, walking path to access many places so you can get about fine with a bicycle. Unfortunately, this is where it ends. The lodge is a 50's style fishing lodge and nothing much has been updated or fixed since then. We stayed in room 1 which was small and that was fine with me except, there is no place in which to put up your clothes or hang your clothes so you have to live out of the suitcase, there are no bike racks to lock your bike, and then, the bed was horrible. It was lumpy and had a bad sag in the middle so we had sore backs every day. There is electrical wiring sticking out of the ceiling fan. Then the room had a damp musty smell and part way through the trip we began to get sick and assumed that we had caught a cold but, we began to notice that when we left the room for the day and got away, our symptoms got better so we think that the place has a mold/mildew issue. There are large holes in the eves of the building so it is possible that from all of the tropical moisture, there is mold/mildew growing. Also towards the end of our stay we had some friends that were going to come down and stay with us for the weekend. They had called well in advance to make a reservation and they are a family of 6 and so they had requested a large apartment with enough room and beds for everyone. They got to the inn only to be told that the room was instead given away to someone else who was going to stay longer. The inn management claimed that they tried to call to notify the family of the change. This was not the case, the family never received a call. The room they were given was smaller only 2 double beds and hence, did not have enough beds for everyone. The management told the family they would give them an extra futon mattress to sleep on. When I saw the futon mattress, I was absolutely appalled at the mattress that they were given. It was filthy, grimy, dusty, had stains all over and worst it had big patches of mold and mildew growing on it. This was a mattress that needed to be burned. I cannot imagine that the management thought that this was acceptable to give to a guest. I would not have let my dogs sleep on the that mattress. Additionally, there was a refrigerator in the room that smelled horribly of fish and it was on the coldest setting but was 80 plus degrees inside the refrigerator so in other words you could not use it nor would you want to. So in short what a shame, for such a beautiful place to have such shabby rooms and poor customer service.

Room Tip: I am not sure that the place has any good rooms.

“Totally Disappointed!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 November 2011

For the location and the price this place is spot on, but that is the only thing I can say that I liked about the place. I was really excited about finding this place but was soon disappointed in the condition the whole place. When you first drive up to the place it seems charming and cute, but after looking at our cottage it just went down hill from there. I can do old and charming but this place lost that after trying to cook dinner on the stove in the kitchen. The stove didnt work and burned half the food we tryed to cook. The waterfront along this motel left alot to be desired, the area along the waterfront was nasty. The mattresses were old and lumpy and the bedding was dirty. I had to do laundry and the laundry area was just an open shed in the middle of the property. I expecting to get old and charming but got scary and dirty. Will not stay here again.

I'm very sorry that you didn't enjoy your stay. This morning's research of room rates in the upper Keys revealed two other properties with rates similar to (slightly higher than) the Seafarer's: one was 10 miles north of town and the other is nowhere near the water. The next lowest rate started rooms at $139.00/night.

The Seafarer is an old fish-and-dive camp built in 1948. It is a vintage Mom-and-Pop trying to keep its niche in the face of ever-expanding large hotel chains in the Keys. Sometimes, especially off-season, we run on a tight budget--but we always respond to reported problems and try to make our guests comfortable. The only thing is..if we don't know about the problems, we can't rectify them.

Perhaps you could tell me a little more about what made the property "scary"..we do maintain our landscaping and lighting and a manager lives on site. The guest laundry is a *building* with lighting and a ceiling fan. It is not close to other units so that guests may do laundry anytime without disturbing other guests. Crime rate in our area is very low. If there is a "scary" aspect about this property we really do need to know so we can correct the problem immediately.

I'm stumped about the "nasty" beach comment, also. Perhaps some seagrass had come in with the tide overnight and hadn't been raked up yet? We're very careful about trash and beach cleanup 5 days a week, more if needed. Please give me some details so I may address the problems you mentioned.

Please: we don't put out any misleading info about our property. There are plenty of reviews and responses here and elsewhere that state it simply: rustic, old, clean, low prices.
No more and no less. Not for everyone. Some love us, others don't. You'll see that again and again.

I can only keep stating, folks, if you aren't happy with something *please* communicate that to the staff so we can try and correct the problem! It does no one any good to keep silent at the time and complain after the fact. We *want* you to enjoy yourself--help us to help you please.

“TOTALLY OLD FLORIDA FEEL”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 July 2011

Pulling into the place is like a little step back in time...all the mature canopy of trees,..the rooms are clean but don't expect perfection here...we were there for our 31st anniversary and so the husband could get his advanced deep water dive certificate..,5 DIVES IN 2 days....with the onsite scuba shack....so all we needed was a place to shower and sleep....there is a little beach area with a canoe...I spotted a washer and dryer...Yes, there is a coffee maker, but ya have to bring your own coffee and filters...$75 a nite on Key Largo...what do ya expect ...Gotta love the Mom and Pops....

“NASTY!!! Beyond Disappointed, >>AVOID<<”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 July 2011

I booked a last minute trip to the Keys and with it being mini lobster season, all of the places that I typically stay at were totally booked.

I relied on Obritz & Hotels.com for reviews and pictures.

The only room available at the Seafarer was their upgraded deluxe cottage which is a one bedroom unit directly on the beach. They call it their “Beach House On The Water” I don’t really care much about money when I am on vacation so $150 for waterfront didn’t even phase me.

The pictures on their website looked good so overall, I had a positive feeling that it would be a nice little cozy location. I was also pleased that for an additional $20 I could bring my pet as I often travel with her.

How wrong was I……..

The pictures must have been taken ten of fifteen years ago as the room pictured online looked nothing like the room that I was in. The beach, waterfront, buildings, grounds everything doesn’t come close.

We arrived for 3pm check-in.. The office was locked. Called the number and the manager was at lunch. No problem, we’ll just sit outside in the hundred degree weather and wait…

Went to the soda machine on the side of the office.. Put in money, pressed the button and got bottles of water that we could have made soup with. Seems that the refrigeration unit hasn’t worked in months and the water/soda just bakes in the sun.

FINALLY got to the room.. N A S T Y.

If it weren’t min-season and everything else in town was booked, we would have instantly left.

Some Highlights….

- Hundreds of ants in the kitchen.
- Black Mold oozing from the wall mounted a/c units.
- Health inspection report on the bathroom door was dated 1999
- Bathroom door was nothing but a piece of plywood painted wait, didn’t close or lock.
- No soap, shampoo, conditioners or anything else.
- Towels smelled of dampness
- Curtin rods on windows, no curtains.
- Enough dust, dirt, mildew and smells to keep my companion up most of the night grasping for an inhaler.

The ”Beach House” came with a kitchen. The inside of the refrigerator was disgusting, the ice machine didn’t work and the ice cube trays were full, but with freezer burn.

Bed was on wheels, the second you sifted your weight, it moved.

Closet door was a bed-sheet hung up with nails.

Just tremendously disappointing, a place that perhaps in the day (circa 1960’s) but is one of those locations that needs to get bull-dozed over and a quality hotel built.

AVOID or your Keys Vacation won’t be as expected.

Well, this was a very distressing review to receive today; naturally I went straight down to cottage #6 to see if anything had been changed since I was on duty last Wednesday, the 20th of July. I'll address each comment in order.

When you see an asterisk (*) before a comment, that means I have taken and will shortly post photos of the problems in question on the Seafarer blog.

Quick note: lobster mini-season is July 27th and 28th; starts tomorrow. Weekends are busy, but the Holiday and Ramada in Key Largo had plenty of rooms left this past Sat. when you were here.. I checked myself.

1) Our "Beach house on the water" (#6) isn't advertised anywhere as "upgraded" or "deluxe", and the charge is $140.00 plus tax. The pet fee is $25.00, so if you only paid $20.00 you were getting a price break. Compare other beachfront units with kitchens in the upper Keys and you will find that we are quite reasonable.

2) Pictures of the site: some are older (about 2 years) of the beach; before we added sky chairs, new hammocks, rebuilt our dock. There is a new dive shop, but it's not on the beach. What else was different?

3) I do apologise for you having to wait to check in, especially in the heat we've been having. I hope you didn't have to wait very long.

4) The soda machine was running ice-cold when I restocked it on Wed. July 20th; I own it and stock it bi-weekly. When a problem is reported I immediately take steps to correct it. Did you inform the office? I'm asking because I wasn't told about the problem until 7/24. I'm so sorry for that, I wish I'd known earlier.

5) Ants in kitchen: Well, as you know, in Florida the little buggers appear when food or pet food is left out ,unfortunately. Did you inform the office? We do have non-poisonous (pet-friendly) methods to deter ants.

* 6) Black mold oozing from A/C units: There is new grey-tinted grout mixed with white grout around the unit to seal it, but no mold. Those units are less than 2 months old. Please tell me which unit had mold on it, because I couldn't find any.

* 7) Health inspection report on door: ( I have to admit this one gave me a good chuckle!) That's a form from the Hotel Business Group, not a health inspection form-- that states our daily and weekly rates, and yes--it is dated 1999. That is because we have not raised our rates since then; actually, we've lowered them!

* 8) Bathroom door is in fact made of wood painted white--but it closes completely and locks with a latch. Perhaps the little doorknob distracted you and you didn't see the latch?

9) Two new bars of soap are standard in the bathroom; they are on the toilet tank. Perhaps you were looking in the shower and missed them? It's true, we don't have shampoo and conditioner. We are what we say we are, a small Mom-and-Pop. We try to keep our rates lower; this is one way. Did you inform the office? If Maria somehow missed giving you soap we'd have been glad to give you some.

10) Towels smelled damp: did you inform the office? We would have gladly given you a fresh set if you weren't happy with the smell.

* 11) Curtain rods in windows, no curtains: There are no curtain rods on any of the windows; there are blinds. On every window except the bathroom, which has an opaque glass jalousie.

* 12 ) Dust, dirt and mildew: As a Navy veteran, I know where to look if housekeeping is slacking off; I checked the overhead light covers, the windowsills, the top of the cupboards..the closet, the shower, the refrigerator door seal, behind the toilet, and I couldn't find any..could you tell me where you found it so I can correct this immediately please?

* 13) Refrigerator and freezer disgusting: I thought maybe Maria, having a heavy workload on weekends, might have skimped on the refrigerator cleaning..out of character for her, but-- despite a few rust spots on the shelves, it was quite clean. Ditto the ice trays..but if you found otherwise, did you let the office know so they could fix the problem?

14) Bed is on wheels: well, you got me there. The bed is on wheels. We'll put down some non-skid pads immediately.

* 15) Closet door is bed sheet hung up with nails: no, it's a proper drapery hung up on a proper curtain rod, has been for at least 6 years. That must have been where you saw the curtain rod, not the windows. No nails.

Bulldoze this place down for a new hotel? We've got too many of those already down here. I'll say it again: this isn't a luxury hotel. There are lots and lots of those here, and little locally-run places like ours are becoming rarer every year. There is a market for us. Some folks like more personable surroundings and desk staff who can make a decision on their own instead of going through the corporate office (i.e. refunds, upgrades, discounts..)

We are proud of our little place--lots of wildlife, native plants and flowers, windows that open, pet-friendly, lots of history and character..but we don't try to say we're anything more than what we are, never have. I'm very sorry you didn't have a pleasant stay here. If you let us know where you found mildew and mold and dust we will correct the problem immediately..I couldn't find any.

“Very Disappointed”

This was my third trip to the Keys and staying at the Seafarer. I have always understood the rooms are not a 4 Star hotel rating. My husband and I reserved the two-bedroom cottage this time and it was very old and in need of updating. Each night the room took on a sewer smell that we could not get rid of with air fresheners. The air conditioner had to be placed on full-blast in order to keep the place cool but it was so loud you could not carry on a conversation inside with it on. We liked the little porch with the table and chairs to sit at but the air conditioning unit was right there and we sweat our butts off from the heat it was giving off on the outside of our cottage. I commend the Seafarer for expanding and adding a Dive Shop and offering excursions; however, the dive shop is located right next to our cottage and we were woken up every morning around 6:30-7am by divers laughing and carrying on right outside our window. Not to mention the barking dog every morning located at the Dive shop. We are going to look for another place to stay the next time we head to the Keys.

Room Tip: The best room is #6 and #16
