“A Bed, a shower, a toilet - what more do ya need?”

This is "old Florida" at its best. The Hungry Pelican is a MOTEL with lots of charm, however; for some people that "charm" could be considered "rough."

We stayed in the Sunburst room ... it was clean. The room was about 25 feet from the busy Overseas Highway - noise level was bad but we kept the window unit air conditioner on high to drown out the traffic noise.

Some attempt to update the bathroom has been made but it's nothing more than a bad renovation. Hot is cold and cold is hot.

Bottom line:
This room was sufficient for our needs for one night. Best part of our stay was eating at the Bayside Grill (next door) which was recommended by the staff person at the office.

It's a possibility that other units on this property are of better quality than the Sunburst.

Room Tip: Stay towards the back of the property near the water - anything close to the street is extremely lou...

“Perfect for us”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012

My husband, 9 month old, and I stayed here one night in January of 2011 as we explored the keys. It was ideal.

Right off the main road, on the water, friendly & helpful staff, decent size room, breakfast, next to a restaurant with great food AND we saw dolphins frolicking in the water the moment we arrived. We sat on the dock and watched them until the sun set (swimming and kayaking were an option too). Then unpacked our belongings and headed next door for dinner.

The room was basic but we only needed it for sleeping anyway. There was a fridge.

“Now called 'The Pelican'”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

Located at 99340 on the overseas Highway. Stayed here for one night but would have been happy to stay for longer. Pleasant and friendly welcome from reception. There are a variety of rooms starting from a very small single to family sized.
Tv, fridge, decent bathroom and a limited breakfast buffet.
Wonderful bay views where canoes are available foc. Free WiFi also.

“Charming old Keys”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

Enjoyed our stay. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Accommodations were comfortable and clean, though a bit dated. Someone had backed into a footbridge and broke it one night we were staying and it was already being fixed early the next morning. Very basic breakfast provided (though I missed the peanut butter the second day). The kayaks and canoes are an added bonus. Outside common areas also extremely nice.

Room Tip: Recommend a room away from the highway for peace and quiet.

“Inexpensive and charming”

We chose the smallest room available and it was perfect for overnight...They have a nice dock and location, fixed up in a very pretty and tropical style. Staff were friendly and helpful, even arranging for us to get our (continental) breakfast earlier than the usual time so that we could make our boat trip.
