We stayed here for five nights, while scuba-diving mornings, walking/reading/sunning afternoons, and eating evenings. It is centrally located in Key Largo, within walking distance of many stores and restaurants, and right on the wharf where our dive boat was docked. Yet it is a couple of blocks off the main drag, on a dead-end street in a residential area, so there was NO road noise at all. We did hear a little ruckus from Sharkey's, a bar adjacent to the property, but it always quieted down by 10pm or so.
The facility is old and a little run down, but our room was sparkling clean. It had two large closets and numerous other storage options, which comes in really handy if you have scuba equipment to keep organized. We were surprised that our room had a small refrigerator. We made good use of it for lunches, carrying our food down to the patio adjacent to the marina, and enjoying the boat and bird traffic while eating.
The bathroom (separate toilet/shower area) was small and a little dark, but again, clean and functional.
Staff was very friendly and accommodating. I left my jacket at the continental breakfast one morning; 15 minutes later, it was at my door with a note from the manager.
The breakfast is a little chintzy, but it does fall well within the bounds of "continental": prepackaged cold cereals with only whole milk to add (skim would have been nice). Also prepackaged hot cereals with hot water to add. Orange or apple juice. Pastries. Bread and a toaster. Coffee.
We paid a negotiated rate (through our scuba charter company) somewhat below the advertised rack rate. It still seemed expensive to me, although it was among the lowest cost accommodations we could find. I guess the high-season market in Key Largo is not saturated. We passed a number of comparable or higher-end properties that were displaying "No vacancy" signs.
Regardless of where you stay in Key Largo, consider dining at Mrs Mac's Kitchen, Hobo's Café, and Sundowners. And dive with Scuba-Do Dive Company.
