Having booked a winter break to escape the monotony of the British winter and to celebrate our wedding anniverary we decided upon a hotel at which we had stayed 2 years previously the Hilton Key Largo Resort ( and now KENNELS ).
We once again looked at the " resorts " own web page ( not the HILTON official web page ) and all seemed as it was on our previous stay so with that in mind we booked up for a four night stay.
On checking in we were dealt with efficiently and allocated a room on the third floor overlooking the bay.........all very nice up to now..... ...... upon entering a fairly tatty room we shrugged our shoulders and thought..........well it's acceptable.
Having just travelled around 5000 miles from the UK we just wanted to be showered and get some rest, however, this was not to be the case.
I layed on the bed to rest and immediately heard some banging comming from an adjacent room.........maintenance ??........well i supose it's got to be done ?.....the we heard a dog bark......oh well maybe the maintenance guy has brought his dog to work with him ? Oh well it's better than leaving the dog alone all day we thought ,afterall whats a little barking.
We decided to sit out on the balcony with a cold drink and watch the world go by.....however,our dreams of peace and tranquility were shattered when to our amazment and dismay we get constant barking from next doors balcony and in the distance another dog barking in reply ! ( IT GOES ON AND ON ) A call down to the front desk to bring this to the attention of the receptionist was met with a reassuring " not a problem sir, we WILL DEAL with it ",all very good we assumed and let it go at that .
20 minutes later and more and more barking i made a further call and this time i was put in touch with the Manageress who assured me in no uncertain terms that this was "not an acceptable situation and that nothing and nobody should spoil our vacation and that the dog and it's owner would be asked to leave the hotel",with this assurance in mind we escaped the din to go fishing on the pier until the problem had been solved. ( still no mention that the hotel was canine friendly,we thought somebody had sneaked in a dog for a night ).
From the pier we could see our room and obviously the room next door and to our amazment was a guy on the balcony with his feet up sipping a cold one with his dog enjoying the warm breeze.......nice vision ? ................ 2 hours went by and still the neighbour was sat outside with his dog ( please recall the Manageress had said " nothing and nobody","unacceptable" " asked to leave " )
We went back to our room and immediately called the Manageress who informed me that she had "rang the room and the occupants cell phone but to no avail,he must have gone out and left the dog in the room alone",.........i informed her that he has been sat outside for the past two hours ??? " oh !" came the slightly less than assured reply............ now call me a sceptic if you wish but i was by now smelling a cover up........ had the Manageress even rang the room? why did she not use a master key to access the room ? Why did she not do everything within her power to sort this problem out?
Simmering on the edge of boiling i decided to leave the hotel and go and get a pizza but decided to go via check-in to vent my spleen.
I was met by a decent guy called Fabian who said to me " oh yeah your the dog guy " sadly my reply was less than cheerfull............. " NO.I'M NOT THE ....... DOG GUY!!! " Im a guy who has travelled 5000 miles for a vacation with my good lady at an extortionate cost, who has been allocated a freaking room next door to the USA kennel club convention!!! So please excuse me if im less than jolly at this moment in time !
After 10 minutes of stating my case i left with the knowledge that this " resort " was indeed a dog friendly " hotel" ( kennel) .
............now i have nothing against our canine friends but not at $230+ per night at my expence and furthermore and in all probability the said canines were more likely than not to be sleeping on the beds........the very same beds that i am paying a kings ransome to sleep on !
Armed with evidence of a cover up and further proof that the " hotels own" website DOES NOT inform potential customers that dogs and there owners are allocated rooms anywhere within the the "hotels" accomodation ANYWHERE even the bridalsuite.........i could go on and on but the warning to all potential HILTON customers is ........... Hilton are a dog friendly chain who " do not discriminate against dogs " as Fabian at check in informed me ,they DO NOT OPENLY ADVERTISE THE FACT. I was informed that the rooms were DEEP cleaned after every dog stay but on leaving i sat in the carpark and watched as the maid cleaned the room,i saw no deep cleaning eqipment being used and for that matter how the hell do you deep clean a matress that may be harbouring fleas from dogs across America.
I demanded a full refund for one nights stay and that was granted on my departure.
Also beware of extortionate parking charges and a resort fee .
On the plus side i did speak with a lady called Carol who works through the night on the front desk............. a credit to Hiltons Key Largo " resort ".
The above statement is a true reflection of my stay .
