“Typical Riz Service ... almost”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

Stayed here for 4 days as part of a business trip that was extended a couple days. The property was beautiful as expected, and the service was exceptional. The prices are what one would expect at a Ritz, and they charge for everything. But there were a couple issues that are worth noting.

First, the poolside chairs. Most of the cushions were either moldy, torn, or both. Torn cushions may not sound like a problem, but when the top and bottom pieces are no longer attached you can't sit in the chair without sliding off. And they were left out all the time and were soaking wet in the morning from rain, sprinklers etc. Not a huge deal, but its something that can be fixed easily. Second was the mattress. Recently it seems like all top shelf hotels have invested in very high quality bedding from the mattress up. This was an old, well worn mattress with a blanket on top covered with a sheet to make it seem as if it were a pillow top matters. Last, and most important, was the concierge service. The concierge had absolutely NO KNOWLEDGE of restaurants anywhere in Miami or the Key. When we wanted to find a yogurt/ice cream place off the property, we were told there were none on all of Key Biscayne. Of course, there is one literally across the street. And the conversation around suggesting a restaurant for us off the property was a joke. Her answer was to hand us a print out of restaurants that we could call.

I would normally rate this a "4" but given the rates and extras, I would expect more.

Room Tip: Definitely want ocean side rooms - otherwise you are looking at a parking lot.

“Favorite hotel ever”

I've stayed in a lot of really nice hotels around the world, and the Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne was my all time favorite. The facility was wonderful, and the staff was amazing.

Room Tip: We had a room on the ocean side that was oversized (no balcony, but great view)

“Needlessly overpriced for a slightly upscale Marriott”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

My wife and our 2 children (age 6 and 3) are just completing our stay at the Ritz, and feel that it is just not worth the price of the rooms, or the constant barrage of over priced things you're forced to spend money on. We ate at dunes the first day, and after being told that they only had a few of the advertised kids menu items, charged us an extra $8 for a side of fried that they came with the Mac and cheese (which was reheated Kraft). The next day at cantina's was not much better with a $24 salad barely enough to fill my appetite, and the rest of the order as way overpriced average Mexican food.

The room itself was your std old Marriott room, but the hair dryer didnt work, the pen was dry, the kitchenette had no pots/pans/cutlery and the desk had no place to plug in my laptop. I know this sounds like minor things, but at $600/night I had really high expectations, ESP being a spoiled Marriott platinum member.

On top of that, they charge $20 to get an umbrella at the beach, and $2 to play a video game in the game room. That is $2 per game!

A few positives, though - staff were all very nice and pleasant-can't really fault them for the decisions of corporate.

This will be last time I come to a ritz. I plan to stick to the jw marriotts where I know I'll get quality and not get ripped off.

“Mostly Hits but a few misses”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 January 2012

It may not be fair (although I think it is) but I rate Ritz Carlton, Conrad, Four Seasons and JW Marriott hotels on a differing scale than other hotel- and they should be, I think, given the cost and the intense marketing each of the luxury chains to to promote the "ultimate" spa and holiday experience. So on to my review after this introduction:

The good- the hotel, which I believe is an older Ritz Carlton, is in very good shape beautiful entrance (marble and gold trim touches) and lobby. The Ballrooms (where I attended meetings and break outs) are very nicely appointed with carved molding and beautiful chandeliers. The sleeping rooms are less "old world" ornate than most RCs I have stayed in- but very nice in a classic meets modern way. Bathroom has double sinks with a very nice shower and separate bath. Bed and linen were equal to any hotel and excellent!

Work out facility is not the best amongst RCs (and certainly not up to Four Season Standards) but a decent number of ellipitcals, treadmills and bikes. "Knock off" nautilus machines are crammed around the periphery and the free weight area is very limited making it difficult for more than two people to work out at the same time in that area. I did not visit the actual spa which is co-located with health club.

We dined one night at an outdoor restaurant- service was very good- food okay but nothing outstanding. I ran on the beach- this being east florida one does not get the powder sand of west Florida and the Gulf - but nice facilities.

Grounds were lush- but the hotel cannot be considered really private- with large high rises to either side intruding onto the scenary- but over all the grounds were well kept and beautiful.
