“The most caring management of a B&B in the area and highly recommended.”

It is not our norm to comment on visits to accomodation but in this instance feel that we owe it the owners of the Fig Tree to state our view in light of the adverse review recently made.

We have stayed and used the Fig Tree over the past ten years and can honestly say that the couple who own and operate the Inn, Dawn and Kevin, are two of the finest persons one could ever wish to meet. They care as much for their guests as they do for their own family. Nothing is ever too much trouble and every small detail is attended to.
Any request for a paricular food is provided. Internet is also available and as regular visitors from the UK this is invaluable.

The weekend breakfast is an absolute delight and always freshly cooked.
We wish them well and sincerley hope that our input will encourage more guests to stay as they will be made to feel, as we are, part of the family.

We have stayed in many B &B's and can honestly say the Fig Tree is up amongst the best.

We love staying at the Fig Tree Inn. This was at least our third stay. The hosts are like family yet attentive. The room was comfortable and spacious, with a lot of attention to decorative details, especially for the valentine's day weekend. It's very close to the beach, we're sorry the temperatures were too low to enjoy the beach, but we'll be back. Highly recommended.

“FIG TREE INN IS THE BEST!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 January 2010

We went to stay at the Fig Tree Inn while our house was being restored after a fire. The owner was very hospitable, Over the course of our stay we were lucky enough to experience three of the rooms. Each room were always clean, and all the beds were comfortable. We also enjoyed the fresh fruit for breakfast and the walks on the beach. Fig tree Innis the best!!!

We stay every year for the "Springing in the Blues" Festival. Dawn and Kevin have always been awesome. Love the inn. We have stayed in all of the rooms, and each one has its own charm. Breakfast is awesome. One year it was jokingly mentioned that one of our party liked steak and eggs. And even though it was not what they had planned for breakfast, Kevin went to the grocery store and got us that steak!!! Location is great, we didnt have to drive all weekend, everything is within walking distance. The house is very clean, beds are comfortable. Coffee in my room in the morning is great. Looking forward to this years stay, and many more. --House Mom Virginia

“Very Disappointed...”

As experienced bed and breakfast users we were very disappointed with the Fig Tree Inn. On line ratings looked good and the location was what we wanted but the location is all we found to be happy about after our stay.

We were not greeted on arrival and never even saw our hosts until the third day. (Although we did arrive around 3 pm on Christmas Eve, it would have been a much better start to at least meet the hosts but we were given no indication through the booking process that they would not be there due to the holiday). Why even be open to new guests if you are not there?

The room we had was small but fairly true to the pictures on line insofar as decor and amenities, however we did not find the place to be very clean or in good repair. I actually had to repair the sink drain myself to allow the stopper to sit up and allow water to drain from it. Granted the place is old but a scrub brush and paint would go along way to make it more appealling. We found the bed to be somewhat uncomfortable, waking up several times every night due to backs aching (as well as the all night parties across the street).

What is billed as a "Continental Breakfast" on weekdays is really a couple of boxes of grocery store pastries on the kitchen counter. No fresh coffee is available (the owners provide small hotel style coffee makers in the rooms but these really don't look very clean and from experience I know that they do not make very good coffee). Apparently we were expected to go into the refrigerator to find things to eat and search through cupboards to find the dishware to eat it on. I had never seen a "Continental Breakfast" that wasn't served on some kind of serving trays with coffee, teas and juices all available for guest selection. I question if the approach at this place would even pass a health department inspection as there were no visible serving tongs and anyone willing to eat the stuff would likely be using their fingers. We got disgusted and found an open restaurant. (This was Christmas Day but luckily there was an open diner nearby).

A regular breakfast on Saturday and Sunday was an improvement and there was certainly plenty of fruit and variety, but in truth the the food (and its taste) was just average. I guess we have been spoiled in the past by innkeepers who delighted in preparing truly special and memorable breakfasts.

In summary, we never felt like a guest at this place. Introductions on arrival should be the least one expects at a B&B. To be left for almost 2 days with no contact from the owner (or their representative) just seems to go against everything one looks for in a Bed and Breakfast. It's all about the personal touch. For the price of this place ($145-155 per night) I know I could have stayed in a much nicer hotel room (I checked that out) on Jacksonville Beach!

Dawn Eggleston, owner at Fig Tree Inn Bed and Breakfast, responded to this review

We are very sorry to have disappointed this guest. We certainly want every guest to be more than satisfied with their stay at The Fig Tree Inn and work very hard to make that happen. In this case, we would like to address a few of the points he found unsatisfactory; his concerns are primarily rooted in misunderstanding and in the fact his preference for a more formal/structured approach and our more easy-going approach are not simply not congruent.

As for us not greeting him upon arrival, self check-in is a service we have provided for years as a "no-pressure" check-in time. Most of our guests really like our unique, relaxed approach to check in. Our rooms are ready by noon and we welcome guests to come and enjoy as early as possible. We do not live on-site, however Dawn spends the majority of her time at the inn, cooking, cleaning and chatting with guests. We do typically drop by to check on new guests - the only reason we did not stop by that night because it was Christmas Eve and we were spending it with our family.

Our breakfast policy is clearly stated on our confirmations and website: Monday thru Fridays are continental self-serve breakfasts and Saturday and Sundays are our full sit down breakfast prepared by the two of us. Our intent with the weekday "self-serve" is allowing guests to help themselves in the main kitchen at anytime...we want our guests to make themselves at home! Our homemade muffins and breads are sometimes combined with pastries from our local bakeries. In this case, homemade pumpkin bread was combined with purchased pastries. Coffee makers in every room as well as in the parlour; coffee, sweeteners and creamers are provided, along with biscotti. As always, during the week (and especially on Christmas Day, the first morning this guest was at the inn) we have fruit trays and juices set up in the refrigerator for self service; plates, cups and silverware as well as serving utensils are always available in the drawers.

One note of particular concern we want to address: health inspections. This is something we take very, very seriously. Our inn has been inspected four times per year for the last eleven years and we have NEVER failed - or even been close to failing - an inspection.

In closing, we want to say our beautiful inn is 95 years old and it has a character all its own. Our weekend full sit down breakfasts are always cooked with pride and joy. As innkeepers, we put a lot of our heart and soul into making each and every guest feel at home and leaving as a new friend. Our business has thrived on our return guests and their referrals over the years. We want to thank each and every one of you for your love and support. We love our bed and breakfast and we love to see you all! Thanks so much.
