“Don't Even Think About Staying Here!!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 January 2007

Why this place is rated #1 is a wonder to me. I agree that relatives and friends must have given the positive ratings, because this place is absolutely scummy! I'd rather sleep in my car, than stay here again. We booked a room here for 2 nights, but only stayed 1. The office was filthy upon check-in and the manager was smoking. There was a plastic container of white powdered donuts sitting on a table, that I guess was considered breakfast. I assume you had to reach your hand down in the container that everyone else had reached down in, to grab a donut. A gallon of milk was sitting out by the donuts, unrefrigerated, when we checked in it was around 1 PM, hard to tell how long it was sitting there. The man had a problem with our key card, he couldn't open the door. Finally got it open, but said they would have to take a look at it later, so they were fooling around outside our door. Soon as you walk in the room, the beds are right there and there is no table to eat at. It was raining pretty hard and there was no rug to wipe your feet on before entering the room. There is ceramic tile on the floor instead of carpet, so the tile got all wet from walking in and out of the room to get our things from the car. My socks were dark brown from the dirt on the floor! This motel is right beside Florida Ave., 44 which is a very busy road. I heard tractor trailers going by all night, even an ambulance! There was so much noise here that I didn't get any sleep at all! You pull your car right up to your front door, so everyone that pulls up next to you is slamming the car doors. The people staying in the room next to us kept opening and closing their doors, starting their car, talking outside our room, the woman had a baby that was crying, and they talked loudly till 1AM! Someone kept walking past our room, scuffing their feet. I could hear a dog barking through the airconditioning unit cut out in the back wall of the room, the refrigerator was noisy, and the soap crumbled into pieces when I opened it. I had to keep the bathroom door closed, because the cheap toilet bowl air freshener was so strong. I was crying, because this place was so disgusting and I got no sleep. I wanted to leave, but my husband was very tired and said we would leave in the morning. I couldn't wait to get out of that place, it was the worst place I have every stayed! We checked out and went to the Citrus Hills Lodge, Best Western on Norvell Bryant Hwy. The Best Western cost $107, but it was well worth it, it was like paradise after staying at the Value Inn. I always use TripAdvisor when booking a room and had never been misled by the ratings, except for this time. The Best Western should be rated #1 and the Value Inn shouldn't even be on the list!

“Home Away From Home”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 April 2006

I didn't want to come to Florida for a family emergency. I've always thought of Florida as "hot, muggy and buggy". Iit is fair to say I wasn't expecting to enjoy my stay at the Value Inn. The young couple who handled my check-in were sympathetic to my situation and I really feel that they went out of their way to make my stay as enjoyable as possible. My room was clean and comfortable. Since I had come here for other than vacation purposes I hadn't thought about bringing much with me other than a few days worth of clothes. The hotel had shaving cream, razors, soap, shampoo and other care items in a basket and even a hair dryer ( I never thought to bring mine even though I use one daily). They had everything I needed to prepare a few meals rather than eat out. On the morning I was planning to leave I mentioned to the man that it was too bad I didn't get to come here for a vacation. He talked me into staying another day and spending it in the hot tub and at the pool. I worked on my tan (of which I previously had none) and the couple even offered me some of their BBQ from the poolside grill their family had made for dinner. I never expected to actually enjoy my stay but I left feeling refreshed and plan to return next year for a real vacation to my new "home away from home".

“Absolutely awful--better suited for roaches than people.”

I wish that I'd read the most recent one star review before stopping by this place. That reviewer has everything spot on (except that he or she got a clean room--ours was filthy and smelled like a wet ash tray).
We were in Hernando because it is about half way on a nice bike trail, and the Value Inn is convenient to the trail When we arrived, I found that the owner/manager hadn't noted our reservation in his book, but we were told that we could have a room, anyway. The room wasn't ready yet (it was mid-afternoon), but looked acceptable from the door, so we paid and took off. When we returned we found (1) the room was a smoking room--though I had requested non-smoking and, indeed,it had been smoked in on a regular basis. The windows looked like the windows in an old barroom, covered with smoke stains and dirt. There were also insects (either roaches or palmetto bugs--I can't tell the difference) and one spider about half an inch in diameter which I thought pretty and my wife thought otherwise.
When we went to tell the owner/manager that we were bailing out, the sloppy blonde mentioned in the prior post was still in the office, still smoking and still unhelpful. We left our cel number for the owner to call. He didn't. We called him again the next day. As soon as my wife introduced herself, he said he had another call and would call right back. He didn't.
We had planned to stay here because of favorable Tripadvisor ratings. I can't help but think that any favorable ratings must have been given by relatives of the owner. I've stayed in motels and hostels all over the world, including some without indoor plumbing, and haven't seen one quite this ratty before.
By the way, the hot tub isn't hot, the pool is full of leaves and the 55 gallon drums that pass for trash barrels were full of beer cans and pizza boxes when we arrived. Looking back, I suppose that should have been adequate warning.

“Disappointment or just false advertisement?”

If you are looking for a cheap place to stay, this is it. However, the extras listed on their website and quoted by the man that took my reservation over the phone (jacuzzi tub in every room, hairdryer, microwave, etc.) were absent. The hot tub outside was broken, and the main office was smoke filled, dirty, and very cramped.
In the room, there was no place to hang clothes or jackets. It had a single sink with a lot of empty cabinets, a hot plate, can opener, and huge computer desk with a plastic flower basket, but no closet to store anything away. I had to drape everything over the back of the large office chair at the desk and use the top of the desk to place my bags. There was only a shower stall and toilet in the bathroom.
I didn't stick around for the morning breakfast that is mentioned; the "free hot dogs" advertised were on a small warmer that did not have a cover and needless to say the food that was on it looked like it had been there for quite some time. I had to wait for several minutes to check in as the lady was on a lengthy personal phone call and continued chatting before giving me my card key. I did not receive any extra towels, but was given a "free" calculator (yes I was puzzled at that one, too) that looked like it had been used as an ash tray from her cigarette.

Overall, the room itself was clean, but compared to what is shown on the website, it is VERY misleading.
The only reason I stayed is that this is a very small town and you would have to drive (or in my case ride your Harley) another 20 miles to the next town. I was not expecting this to be a 5-star establishment by no means, but even under that pretense I was very disappointed. Next time I am in the area I will find somewhere to stay in nearby Crystal River.
