Flamingo Inn is located on the Southern end of the island, about 3 miles away from the hustle and bustle of a pier and shopping district. There is a grocery store (Publix) about 1 mile away. The Inn sits on a corner of the only highway on the island (Estero Blvd.) and a side street (Flamingo St.), about 100 yards from the beach, that happens to be widest there. A noise from the highway was a problem at night (apparently there is a lot of Harleys on the island). The Inn is surrounded by a sort of concrete pad on 3 sides, with a small garden on the back side. There’s no common area (lobby) for Inn guests.
The room was small with a two-element electric stove/sink combo, a small refrigerator, a microwave on top of it, and a coffeemaker and a toaster on top of the microwave, so all that looked quite rickety, with a spaghetti of electrical cords hanging freely. The bathroom was very tiny and cramped, and the shower cabin was about 2 ft by 2 ft, so taking shower posed a challenge.
On the other hand the bathroom and the room were spotlessly clean, and the owners (Joerg and Alexandra Eiffel) were very personable and friendly. They are also continuously upgrading all the rooms, with Joerg doing most of the labor himself, so perhaps he will soon replace stained carpets in hallways etc.
So if you are young, thin and lean, unspoiled, or a tourist on a budget, and just need a place to spend a night and hit the beach in the morning. that's the place for you. But if you crave space, comforts, lush tropical gardens, private beach etc., then you need to find another place (and pay considerably more, of course).
