“Rent sight unseen or get out of their office.”

We were staying at Pointe Estero resort this trip. We visited several other properties to look for a condo for an upcoming month long rental. All of the properties we visited were more than happy to show us their condos and grounds, EXCEPT Smuggler's Cove. My husband and I (retired) were in shock at the treatment we received from the front desk. I walked into the office to find 2 women there. They were obviously not busy. I explained we wanted to view their resort for a month long rental. I was told "NO". They refused to show us around. They said condos were empty and available to rent, but we could not see them. If we wanted to see them we had to rent them sight unseen. How in the world does this make sense... they have something to rent, but we can't see it first???

“CALL BEFORE YOU GO! CHANGE IF YOU CAN!”

What a disappointment! After visiting Smugglers Cove last year, we were so pleased that we decided to go again this year. WHAT A HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE! The week of our arrival we contacted them to make sure how we could get our key after hours. Not a word was said about the conditions we would find when we got there. We arrived late our first night. They are working on the driveway area of our condo and it was blocked so we had to park next door and drag our luggage and groceries up to the room. Annoyed but exhausted we put our things away and looked out at the Gulf...landscape barricades were strung across the yards leaving very little grass to use for sitting. The landscape was apparently being redone and had all been torn up. Still being tired, we went to bed thinking we'd see things differently in the morning. We found sand & grit in the bed. Unbelievable. The next morning we we out on the balcony to look at the Gulf and all we could smell was exhaust fumes from the workers out front. And we got a good view of the mess that was actually surrounding us. The driveway workers created dust clouds which wafted over the pool area as well. We went to the desk and talked to a very nice lady who connected us to the property manager, a very surly woman who needs some training in customer service. She initially refused to refund our money, but finally relented, less the one night's stay. We also talked with the maid who cleaned our room prior to our arrival and showed her the condition of the sheets we had complained about. The maid apologized, knowing we were right and said that the mess was a real problem. She was far more professional than the woman we spoke to on the phone. We found another place to stay in short order and left as quickly as possible. We will likely never return based on how we were treated by the property manager. It's a nice, quiet location. The condo was lovely. Last year our A/C went out but they eventually got it fixed. No big deal. But this year was more than even we could handle. Please do yourself a favor - if you have reservations here, make a phone call FIRST and see if the work is done. At least we had use of the elevator. If you have respiratory problems as my spouse does, this may not be the place for you this year. And there are plenty of other very nice condos on the beach this season with vacancies.

Sections of Smuggler's Cove was closed during the Summer of 2010 for installation of parking lot pavers. All renovations have been completed and Smuggler's Cove was once again voted "Best Condo on the Beach." Smuggler's Cove has 66 condos in it's rental program and 6 are offered by individual owners. I was happy to contact the condo owner and provide a refund on his behalf.

“Overall good value and excellent location.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 October 2010

We just returned from our 2nd vacation at Fort Myers Beach. This time we stayed at Smugglers Cove. Our original accommodations were in Condo A on the 5th floor, but found out because of the work they were having done at the time, the elevator wasn't working so we contacted other owners and ended up staying in Condo A, 1st floor. The condo was a bit outdated, but was equipped with almost anything you needed. Publix right down the street. However, the view and being so close the beach was outstanding. They are getting their parking areas and walkways paved so that was a bit of an inconvenience. The elevators were finally running the day before we left. We seen dolphins almost every day, the sting rays were plentiful, and loved watching the birds. There weren't many people there at the end of September, but they starting rolling in when we left. I would probably stay there again, but would enjoy a condo on a higher floor if the elevators are still in working order. Overall, a good place to stay.

“Relaxation right on the water!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 June 2010

Yes, the furnishings are a little outdated, but it was clean, comfortable, and relaxing. Our family had a wonderful time. You can sit in your chair in the living room and STILL see folks walking down the beach, it doesn't get closer than that. We saw dolphins, swim within 10 feet of us, rays going about their business, jellyfish (not harmful!), sand dollars, shells, etc.........just wonderful.
The pool was great, but having had a salt pool ourselves, we believe it was over treated at one point as the families eyes were burning for HOURS. We think if it was just treated that a note should be posted!
Also the air went out in our unit, but they moved us and dealt with it. Nothing to get mad about, it happens.
Most rooms have books, swim accessories and other items to help fill any empty spaces, but we found our time was filled with swimming and browsing. We took the GOODTIMES charter, ecotour, and we all liked that very much!
