First, when we had made reservations for my stepdaughter's wedding party, I had asked if it would be possible for us to do an early check in as our flight was arriving at 10AM on 01/06/12. I told yes. When we arrived at the hotel none of the rooms were ready. Which we were fine with as Chris was very friendly and apologetic. I gave her my printed copies of our reservation which was initially for 3 kings and 2 doubles with rates of $59/night for king and $49/night for the double. She said they had on record double reservations for 1 king and 3 doubles. I told her that was fine because we were needing to cancel one of the king rooms anyway.
Second, when we finally got our rooms, we noticed that one of the doubles (the bridesmaids' room) had a fridge and microwave but our room did not. Not a big deal. In our room, I was putting my toiletrie bag on the vanity, I noticed a couple minute ant-looking insects running across, so I wiped them with a tissue and flushed them. My husband noticed more later. On the way to breakfast the next morning at 9:30, I stopped to check on my step daughter, she said the bridesmaids had to switch rooms at 3AM because their room had bugs all over the place. They were in the beds and crawling on the luggage. I was NOT happy to hear this as our room was directly next door to theirs. My husband had walked on to breakfast only to return saying they had already put everything away. We ended up eating at the diner next door. We left for our daughter's wedding, came back that evening to find that the best man's room had ants crawling on his wall. He let the front desk know and she offered him bug spray. At this point, my step daughter's mother and I went down to talk to the front desk clerk, Kathy. She offered to move him and comp one night on all our rooms. She said they just encountered the ant problem recently and had just sprayed a door that evening that was covered with ants. When I told her about the minute ant looking bugs, she said those were called sugar ants and they come up through the drain. I would think if a hotel had an insect problem, they would call exterminators. I went back to our room only to find the desk full of sugar ants. I walked back down to the front desk and Kathy offered me the bug spray. I asked her to please take a look at the desk and her response was, "I trust you." She kindly gave me the gallon of bug spray and said she would come by to pick it up when she was done taking care of another client whose air conditioner was not working. I then mentioned that ours wasn't cooling all the way either. That was not addressed. But having travelled from Chicago, I was not going to make a scene over an air conditioner. I was more worried about traveling with bugs.
The next morning we were all ready to leave La Quinta! I went down to check out and told Curtis I was paying for our room, 150 and the bride's 118. When given the total for both rooms, I questioned the charges and he said room 150 was comped one night but not on 118. I told him Kathy said she was comping on night on all our rooms for the inconvenience and asked to speak to a manager but was told there was no management on that day and they could not be bothered on a Sunday. (REALLY?!?!) He then proceeded to write down management's phone number and told me to call them in the morning. Then I noticed that the rate for 150 was $59/night and I showed him my reservation which was for $49. He said that reservation had been cancelled. At this point I was aggravated and asked him how that could have been when we had checked in and obviously stayed there. He said, "Hey, I am nobody's whipping boy." He finally gave me back my change as I had paid in cash. I told Curtis I would be calling the Chamber of Commerce, Better Business Bureau and the Health Department. He said, "Go ahead, it's a free country. We have very loyal customers and are always fully booked." Great diplomacy! We were glad to finally get in the car and leave Fort Myers La Quinta! With every perosn we who asked how our trip was, we have told them wonderful but don't stay at the La Quinta!!!!
