“DO NOT STAY HERE- GO NEXT DOOR FOR HALF THE PRICE”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

We booked this hotel for Friday and Saturday night this past weekend (beginning of February) and though the rates were still high (over 300 for only two nights), we knew it would be more affordable than many of the other motels and hotels along the AIA strip (right by the ocean). Do not let the pictures deceive you- THIS PLACE IS A DUMP. Our toilet seat wasn't even attached, and fell off with the touch of a finger. None of the amenities worked. The floor was slimy and chunks were missing from the walls. MOST DISTURBING was the customer service. When we called to ask about the air conditioner and television not working, the women at the front desk- Nydra and Gail- did not offer to come look at the room, did not offer to give us a different room (although there were several open rooms beside us), and engaged in a heated discussion about how "we should have known what we were getting into" and that "it was our fault." I cannot adequately describe how disrespectfully they talked to us, and they refused to refund us (at this point we just wanted to go anywhere else) because they said we had been at the hotel too long without complaining. Mind you, upon first checking in, we had just dropped off our bags and gone to dinner, so as soon as we spent more than 5 minutes in the hotel, we contacted them. That night and the next morning, we overheard at least two other sets of unhappy customers complaining about the terrible conditions and the horrible attitudes. I could go on and on, but the bottom line is, this place is not worth it. Hopefully it won't be around much longer, but please avoid it if possible. It is important to note that the Avalon Waterfront is right next to another hotel, Tropicay, which is about half the price of Avalon. Though Tropicay is not the nicest place, Avalon IS NO BETTER. DO NOT waste your money- if you want an affordable trip, you are better off at Tropicay.

Room Tip: Don't go here. Go next door to Tropicay- half the price but the same quality.

JSW,

Thank you for your review of the Avalon Waterfront Inns. It saddens me that you had a less than desirable experience with our hotel. I would like to take this opportunity to elaborate on a few concerns that you have with your stay.

Amenities: you stated that none of them worked. Upon my engineer entering the room upon your departure he found that the Television & AC worked just fine, by flipping on the light switch next to the door that is labeled "TV & AC." I'm very sorry that you did not see this.

Broken toilet seat: this was promptly repaired by my engineer.

Customer Service: Nydra and Gail have never had any guest complaints. However, each complaint is taken very seriously and shall be investigated.

Tropic Cay: I appreciate that you enjoyed your stay at the Tropic Cay (our sister hotel). And yes our rates do fluxuate depending on occupancy levels.

Thank you,

Shawn Townsend

“Feb 3,2012 - this is the worst place We have ever stayed !! Hell on earth”

We paid 120.00 canadian, you could not pay me to stay in this place again it felt so dirty. The bathroom was so disgusting, rust from the shower head ,mold in the cabinet ,I was so disgusted paint falling off the walls, dirty carpets,1 channel on TV, no phone, dirty dusty blinds, the air was the only thing working and blew dust on you to boot. What person would stay 6wks in this rat hole SICK . The only favourable comments are probably posted by the general manager and owner Shawn Townsend I bet he wouldn't stay there. We couldn't wait for morning to get out of there. Filed a complaint to the staff they don't care said the place was 50 yrs old .Breakfast !! you have to be kidding, terrible coffee with dry creamers and oh!! the hair in the cup is free. I want my money back LOL, So please do yourself a favour a spend the extra 70 or 80 dollars for a decent nights sleep. A place where you can at least feel safe taking a shower.

Room Tip: Danger Keep Out

“Flea Bag Inn”

Horrible place!!! Ants in the bathroom, No screens on the windows, Fridge did not work, electrical sockets falling apart. Television from the 1990s and hardly any cable channels.
1970's furniture. Only good thing across the street from the beach. Advertised Continental Breakfast. What is coffee the new continental breakfast? Pool was dirty. At first they sent us to a room around the corner in a questionable area. Did not stay at that no carpeted ugly room.
So upset and sad that my stay in Florida was ruined after having to sleep at this Flea Bag inn.
Oh and after having to pay $10 a day to park one night no parking existed. The staff said not there problem. So sad so sad.

“AWFUL...TERRIBLE..DIRTY!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 January 2012

I paid extra for a suite online. I walked into the lobby & saw a girl in a blue T-shirt eating & ignoring us! After a while I asked her if she "saw anyone at the desk"? She said "YEAH! Hold on, be right with you". So, THIS should of told me what I was in store for. I don't even UNDERSTAND how this MOTEL is able to advertise itself, other than by a sign outside in neon letters stating " CHEAP ROOMS BY THE HOUR"..Don't stay here, unless you like completely disgusting rooms with little bugs, 50's style stove that does not work, early 80's furniture that looks like they picked various pieces from dumpsters & decorated the room with it. The pillows smell so bad, the couch was so filthy I borrowed a sheet from the housekeeper to cover it. I had no light bulbs in my room & no batteries. The young guy behind the desk just laughed & rolled his eyes. The pool is just so creepy! THAT'S THE WORD FOR THIS PLACE!! The bathroom is just disgusting & if you take a shower (which is a trickle of water coming out of an antiquated rusty spout)..YOU NEVER FEEL CLEAN! Unsavory characters roam the premises, Thank God for the safe in my room, although the shape this room & Motel was in, I don't think anyone would bother robbing you here. I was in a rush to leave. I left my cell phone behind. I was back home when I realized it, but have a tracking device on the phone. I called the Motel & told them the tracking device said it's about 20 feet from the room. (They have their housekeepers & staff living out of extra rooms)..so I assume that were my phone is...anyway, the staff acted..umm? like they have had too much Florida sun? They said " well, ah? Um? sorry bout that"..Just don't stay here & consider yourself warned.

Debbie:

Thank you for your review of the Avalon Waterfront Inns. I am sorry to learn of your unsatisfactory stay with us. Allow me to discuss the several items you brought to my attention.

1.) Because we are a small property employees need to have a quick lunch, and also maintain the position of the front desk. I am sorry that you felt that my employee eating their lunch was un-acceptable.

2.) We have never and will never "rent rooms by the hour." This is a family run business that prides it's self in great customer service while maintain a budget friendly property. I know of several other property in the area that were available during your stay, yet for 3 times the price. Thus the reason you booked with us, was to save some much deserved money on your vacation to spend on local attractions, and dinners out on the town, which is a great idea!

3.) I have reviewed our guest complaint log, and don't see any complain from your room. This saddens me. Had you actually brought to our attention the defaults that you found in the room, my pleasant staff would have been more than happy to fix these items for you in a promptly fashion. However this did not happen because my staff did not know of the defaults you were finding in your room.

4.) Our creepy pool area? I'm not sure what pool area you may be refering to. Both our pools are sparking clean, kept pristine by my staff, with ample seating area and plenty of room to spread out. Please review the pictures on tripadvisor & on any 3rd party site and you will see this for your self. Oh, I would also like to mention that both our pools are heated as well. A comfortable 88 degrees.

5.) Employees occupying vacant room. This has never been and never will be the case. At no point does any member of our team occupy a room. This is simply a false statement.

Thank you,

Shawn Townsend

“2nd Year and Booked for next year”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 January 2012

We spent one month here last year and are here for 2 months this year. It is true that everything is not perfect but we paid for perfect in 2010 at the Bahia Mar and were very disappointed. The same rate for "perfect" for a week in a small room provided us with 6 weeks here. I have found the staff to be very responsive to our needs and the atmosphere family oriented. All in all, though things may be worn- the rooms are clean and the view of the beach restive.
