Background:
We booked a hotel through Priceline for 1 night pre-cruise, hoping to stay near downtown Fort Lauderdale or the beach area, however thanks to a missed click, we ended up “winning” the Sheraton Inn Cypress Creek, a hotel about 20 minutes away from the area we wanted to be in which also necessitated a rental car. We decided to try to make the most of it.
Check-In:
We arrived at the Sheraton at around Noon by rental car from Fort Lauderdale Airport. It was easy to find and had plenty of free parking. The outside of the hotel was clean and well-landscaped. The lobby was large and clean with waterfalls, fish, a small gift shop, bar, and breakfast area ($). Check-in technically doesn’t start until 3pm but we were able to check in on arrival, however we were limited to a second floor room facing the train tracks. We didn’t want to wait all day so we opted to take this room. The front desk staff were not the friendliest, seeing me waiting at the desk but ignoring me until they were ready to help me.
Room:
We had some issues with our keys not working which required another trip to the front desk, but it was quickly sorted out. Our room had a living area with couch, dining table, mini fridge, coffee maker with complimentary Starbucks coffee, and an LCD TV, with a separate bedroom with 2 double beds as requested, a dresser, vanity, armoire, and another LCD TV. The bedroom also had a small French balcony, however the door was extremely stiff and difficult to open and close. Overall the room was a nice size and layout, but needs work. The carpet was stained, worn, and lumpy, the dressers and desk had some grime on them, and there was visible dust in the corners and crevices. I’m sure some of these issues are due to the age of the hotel, however a good renovation and scrub would serve it well. The bathroom was also tiny, but it served it’s purpose. Unfortunately the one big con was the noisy air-conditioning in the room. It was so loud that it drowned out the noise from the train track arms closing down below.
Check-Out:
Check-out was fast and painless, and with a $0 bill having pre-paid through Priceline, we were on our way out within minutes of arriving at the desk.
Some Random Tips:
- Beverages at the gift shop cost more than the vending machines located on each floor. Do yourself a favor and purchase them from the machines.
- There are a few fast food restaurants in the immediate area within walking distance, including a McDonalds, Wendy’s, and Burger King.
- I cannot comment on the restaurant, pool, or business centre as we did not use these amenities.
- Wireless internet is free near the front desk in the lobby but there is a charge to use it in your room.
Overall:
We had an “okay” stay at the Sheraton, however we would not book this hotel again. It was okay for 1 night, but I would not have wanted to stay any longer due to the cleanliness issues.
Room Tip: Ask for a room on the opposite side of the train!
