“rooms very small”

Firstly i have to say that the staff are the best staff i have come across , and the cleanliness of the accommodation is excellent with the bed being very comfortable with quality bedding
However at the time of booking i requested a quiet room, unfortunately put into 122 , which is directly opposite the only ice machine, it is also on the corner linking alcazar and worthington, the main thoroughfare, so for privacy would have to keep blinds closed, it also faced a wall. The bathroom has to be the smallest i have ever been in, If i outstretched my arms, i could touch the bathroom door on one side and the window on the other. The shower was tempremental in respect that it would would go from red hot to freezing cold and back again?
Finally despite all the negatives, it is a very peaceful/tranquil place...and would stay again, however not room 122

Room Tip: dont book room 122...

I just finished my first stay at The Worthington. I have stayed at 3 other guest resorts in Fort Lauderdale and have to say that not only is the staff most kind and friendly but also the guest who stayed there. No drama or bitter queens were found during my stay (1/17-23 2012) only super friendly guys who wanted to sit and talk with you either during the day or at night.
While the hot tub did get crowded at night when I was in it, somebody would always get out so the person who wanted to get in could. True kindness if you ask me.
Would I recommend to someone to stay at The Worthington...Hell Ya.
Would I stay at The Worthington again.....Hell Ya.
Perfect location, clean, friendly, attentive staff...what more could you ask for!
Thanks for making my business/pleasure trip special while staying there. I'll be back you can count on that.

Room Tip: If you are someone who goes to bed early then don't ask for the rooms near the hot tub on the fi...

This was my first stay at The Worthington, after having stayed at 5 other gay guesthouses in Fort Lauderdale over the past 10 years. The main courtyard is quite lush with a large, bath-water warm kidney shaped pool and a 5-person hot tub. The hot tub was often over crowded after dark since it was so small in comparison to the number of rooms on the property. Quite a few tables, chairs & chaise lounges are spread throughout. We booked a deluxe king-bed, one bedroom.
Upon arrival, the day manager was very gracious and gave us a tour of both the Worthington & its sister property, next-door. He also gave us a few free drink tickets to the local gay bars, which was a nice touch. Unfortunately, we were quite underwhelmed with our room. We were on the 3rd floor, which was fine, but the room was very dark & sterile feeling, with just 1 window. The window had only a blackout curtain so it was either total closure to outside light or no privacy - revealing all to any people outside on the deck just outside our room. A sheer curtain or plantation shutters are an easy fix and would provide some welcome privacy while allowing in some light. The walls of the room could have used some touch up paint; lots of scuff marks and some peeling paint on the windowsills. The room also was decorated with wicker furniture; this is not what I would expect in a gay guesthouse in this day and age, even if it is in Florida.
Oh, and about that deck…not one person was seen on it during our entire 4 day stay. It was just not inviting space. The furniture was really worn and quite dirty and moldy; also the deck itself was quite decayed with buckled planks & peeling paint.
Breakfast was also less than impressive. It only had fresh regular coffee with the decaf. in instant form only. Instant coffee, really??? Two cereals and some really yucky pre-packaged bagels, muffins, & danishes rounded out the spread. No yogurt and no fresh fruit were available. I have stayed at least 9 or 10 times at the gay guesthouses in Fort Lauderdale and this was one of the least impressive breakfasts I have seen. Though to be totally honest, it is becoming pretty indicative of the breakfasts at most of the other guesthouses these days.
One other annoyance is that the Worthington allows smoking anywhere on the property, including in the courtyard by the pools. In a small confined space like the pool area smoking should not be allowed as it does intrude on the non-smokers sharing the same space. During our stay about 2/3 of the other guests were smokers so second-hand smoke was unavoidable. Towels for the pool area where not to be found easily, one has to ask for them from the front desk which is annoying for a late night swim since the office is closed after about 8pm.
I will acknowledge that the condition of many of the gay guesthouses in Fort Lauderdale is slowly deteriorating as the majority of them were gut-rehabbed about 10 years ago and are beginning to show the need for a refresh. I also think some of the management at these establishments are becoming a bit lax in their attention to detail.
My past experience with several guesthouses is that they often have a pitcher of iced tea or lemonade and a light snack (pretzels, popcorn, sometimes even fresh baked cookies) available throughout the day, this was not the case at The Worthington, just coffee, that’s it.
I probably will not return to The Worthington, it was not terrible, just not terribly good. This is a shame because most of the issues are small and could be addressed with little expense to the owner. While the location is great, there are about 8 or so other gay guesthouses within a few blocks to choose from. I have already selected another for my next visit.

Room Tip: I would suggest a room around the pool.

Thank you for your review, we always appreciate the good reviews as well as reviews such as yours where we did not live up to your expectations. I have looked up your reservation and the room you stayed in was a standard guestroom and was the last room available as your reservation was made less than 3 weeks prior to your arrival. I just wanted to clarify that you where not in a deluxe Guestroom or a One bedroom Suite. Many guests request that room for its privacy and how quiet it is, can't please everyone but we try. Some of your concerns are valid and I will take action to correct, that room is already on the list of rooms that will be closed out for updates and blinds will now be installed. We tend to like the wicker furniture, it is very Florida and most guests appreciate the laid back Key west style of our rooms.
We restrict smoking in all our rooms but feel there is ample space to be in a smoke free area. We do not want to become overbearing with rules. Our 10 man Hot Tub is quite popular and the two heated pools generally make everyone happy.
The upper deck is not a popular hang out as it is not clothing optional and is on the third floor, usually just the guests on that floor sometimes use it. We have A beautiful deck between the building that is brand new as well as ample seating area in sun or shade. Our resort has probably the most outdoor courtyard areas to enjoy than most of the other resorts in the area. The upper deck will be re planked soon and we will use the new composite decking material that we used on the other deck I mentioned.
Our complimentary breakfast consists of: Great freshly ground coffee, plain & raisin cinnamon Otis Spunkmeyer pre-packaged bagels, mixed danish, muffins, 3 types of Oatmeal, Bananas, apples, whole grain bread, raisin brand, cheerios, fat free milk, 2% milk and Orange juice. We are required by Broward County Health department to have pre-packaged goods as we are not a restaurant, so we do purchase the best pre-packaged goods available. Most of the resorts on the beach use the same products. There are restaurants within a block of the resort should someone want a buffet of eggs. Unfortunately we don't get many requests for decaffeinated coffee, we are now looking into getting a Kreurig coffee maker with the new K cup for single brewed cups. That would fulfill the need quite well.
Thank you once again for your comments and suggestions, Have a great Day.
Jim Durhan

By far, the Worthington is one of the best locations in Fort Lauderdale if you want a walkable experience, near the beach. It's across the street from a few other guest houses, and you'll find those folks in the neighborhood.

The pros: It's very clean, well maintained, and the rooms are spacious. I had a kitchenette and the refrigerator was great - remember there is no bar on property, so BYOB means you need somewhere to store your goods.

The cons: There are a few areas that could use some TLC - ie: the pool chairs could be upgraded, the Alcazar's pool is better for sun, but the Worthington's pool is better for socializing. The gym/laundry is only available during office hours - not sure why - it would be nice to be able to work out early in the morning, especially if you use the Worthington as a base during a business trip to FLL. (Which would make sense to your corporate travel office, since it's right outside the downtown.)

The guests tend to skew upper 30s-50s, give or take. I was on the young side, but it wasn't an issue at all. Folks are friendly, and the absence of the gaybot body obsessed makes this a relaxed environment.

Overall a good experience.

Room Tip: Avoid the first floor of the Worthington - lots of traffic.

Thank you for your Kinds and praise of our resort. I have already begun the process of upgrading the pool lounges, The Worthington side is now complete with the new White straps and yellow accent stripes. Looks incredible. The Gym is open daily at 6:00am and open till close of business. Due to insurance reasons the Gym must close if no one is monitoring the room, if someone was to injure themselves there would be no one to help them. If we did leave it open and unattended I'm sure you all know what that would turn into....lol. We Thank everyone for making The Worthington Alcazar resort the most popular Gay owned men's Resort on Ft. Lauderdale Beach. Have a Great Stay!

My husband and I have travelled a great deal in our 25 years together to various parts of Florida (Orlando, St Petes, The Keys) and this past trip we had for two weeks in November was definately one of the best. The Resort was clean, well managed, rooms were excellent and always cleaned by a very good staff. The Front office staff were friendly, helpful, funny and made you feel at home as soon as you arrived. The Owner, Jim obviously knows how to treat his staff as most have been at the Resort for many years. It was also nice to see an owner put money back into his resort as the full time maintenance crew were always working and improving on some part of the resort. A truly wonderful vacation and we have already booked our next stay in late February and March. Close the beach (2 blocks) close to Gay Beach (5 minute walk) and near some great restaurants. Well done Worthington.Alcazar Resort, Ft Lauderdale.

Room Tip: If you like a quieter atmosphere ask to be on the Alcazar side
