“Great Pre or Post Cruise Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 February 2012

Great location on the beach and close to the cruise terminal. The hotel is well equipped to handle weekend crush of embarking and disembarking passengers off of the cruise ships. In each instance we checked in at 11am and had a room within one hour. Our only caveat to other guest is to avoid the 100 level rooms in the beach tower. The views are iconic Florida as you look out onto the public beach and the volleyball courts, but you are on the first floor so there is no privacy at all Try to get a main hotel beach view.

Room Tip: Avoid 100 level beach tower rooms. No privacy and lots of people using the hallway to get to the poo...

“Very comfortable, awesome location”

We stayed here in January 2012 and had a very pleasant stay. Room was spacious and beds very comfortable. Staff very helpful and friendly.

It was kind of cool outside but the pool was heated and was great to relax in after a day of travel. My husband even hazarded jumping in the ocean for a swim. The beach is lovely and clean.

The restaurants are nice but expensive (it is the Sheraton so we expected that) . We particularly liked the bar with the mermaid theme.

My only disapointment was our ocean front room did not have a balcony and windows did not open. we would have liked to hear the ocean at night.

“Not for Business travelers – OK for families”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

I was traveling on business and this hotel wasn’t too far from the Convention Center so I decided to give it a try especially since their website was touting a “property-wide, multi-million dollar renovation.” Upon arrival at 2pm I wasn’t able to check in because there were no rooms ready and everyone at the desk was being told the same thing. It was peak season so I was ok with waiting a bit and figured I could grab lunch.

As a business traveler who arrived at 2pm I wanted to get something for lunch while I waited for my room. Even though this hotel has several restaurants, none are open for lunch except the pool café which is outside (in the heat) and has a very limited menu. Once I was in my room a few hours later (in the main building) I was able to order room service. However, if you are in the “Beach” building I found out from colleagues that they will not take room service orders or deliver room service if it’s raining so you are just out of luck over there.

Not wanting to sit in the heat I walked back to the lobby to wait. As a Platinum member I just sat across from the front desk in the lobby hoping they would call to let me know my room was ready. One by one others who were waiting around me for the past hour or more began to get calls and check in. My colleague who has absolutely no status at SPG was also one of those who received a call. As the lobby cleared out I walked back up to the front desk to inquire about my room. The front desk staff person was friendly and stepped away to talk to her manager in the back. When she returned she told me that they were going to upgrade me to a balcony room in the main building since I was waiting so long.

By 3:30pm I was finally checked in and my “upgraded” room was small (2 doubles instead of the king I reserved) but I guess the upgrade was a view of the water? My room was clean but the entire hotel felt dated and even though nothing was worn it didn’t feel relaxing or plush either. I uploaded pictures of my room and a map of the main building.

This hotel would be fine for any family looking for time on the beach and many kids enjoying the pool and beach…Too many…with lots of rooms that face a courtyard in the MAIN building (see pic) where a pool is located the sound just echos to all rooms around it.

Though I would not recommend the hotel in general nor stay at it again, the front desk and room service staff and valet were all very nice. I give 5 stars to the valet service as it never took more than 5 mins from the time I called the valet until my car was out front. They were FAST, cheerful, smiling and friendly. You do have the option to self park with the hotel directly across the street (there is a charge for self park also).

The Westin and W properties located on the same strip just a little further up looked much nicer and I may try those next time. The Hilton near the convention center was very nice (colleagues stayed there but it's not on the beach) and the Hilton close to the Sheraton also looked upscale.

Room Tip: Main building courtyard VERY loud; No room service to Beach building when it's raining. No hotel...

“Pre-cruise one night stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

Despite the negative reviews on this web site we stayed in this hotel for one night before our cruise and can only say we would book again.

Our large comfortable twin room was in the building on the beach. Whilst we did not have time to review all the hotels facilities, our impressions were very positive and could not understand why so many had posted negative comments.

Our room was clean, comfortable, the shower worked, it was quiet and right on the beach.
We didn't sample the breakfast bar, but from those we spoke to,it was fine.

I would recommend the Bahia Cabana for breakfast over the road.

Room Tip: Ask for room in building on beach

“What a find !”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

We stayed here for three nights post cruise. We did not really know what to expect as review we read were a bit vague - so we were delighted when we checked in to find out we had made a great choice. The reception area was much smaller than expected of a Sheraton, but the receptionist was great - and took care of our luggage and some personal items as our rooms were not ready. On going to our room we were delighted to find that on opening the door we had the best view possible - a full wall of window overlooking the beach. As the hotel is split by a busy main road in several buildings we had no idea what to expect with our room - but we could not have chosen better. And the beds - oh my goodness i have never slept in such a comfortable bed - much to my husbands dismay we had two double beds and they were so comfy i had one to myself!!! The hotel is close enough to bars and restaurants without being bothered by them. We were advised by the concierge to use the water taxi ($20 each for a day) - it was great advice we used the hop on hop off service and had a great day - a water taxi pub crawl with fantastic food and lots of local information from the taxi crew. We would definitely recommend this hotel and plan to return again - we loved fort lauderdale and the Sheraton.

Room Tip: 9th floor in the tower - fabulous ocean views
