“Small, but very friendly and accommodating”

We spent only one night at this hotel before a cruise, but our stay was very pleasant. The room was small, super clean and reasonable. There is even a small, heated pool in the center of the the room's location.

The best part of the hotel is the staff. The morning we were set to leave the hotel to get to our cruise in Miami, we had a flat tire (rental car). Hertz would not come out for less than $60! AAA wanted us to wait over an hour. The girl who was checking in people that day asked about our problem and she got right on the phone to call the engineer to come to help us. The spare tire and tools to change it, were very difficult to use. The young lady also got her machine to inflate a tire from her car, along with another jack. As soon as the engineer arrived with a help, he brought over a tire repair kit, looked over the tire and found a piece of metal that was causing a leak. He patched the tire and used her compression to inflate the tire. Within an hour, thanks to all their kind help, we were on our way back to Hertz to exchange the car for another to make the trip to Miami. The engineer even offered to drive us where we had to go if we had any more problems with the car. Even the manager, Maggie, came over to see how everything was going and asked if she could do anything for us.

This kind of service you don't find very often. Be sure that if we are ever looking to stay in Ft. Lauderdale again, we will give them a call.

Room Tip: We were on the first floor because there is no elevator and we had heavy luggage. Keep in mind, tha...

MarylandBev,
To say that the best part of the Ocean Gate is the staff is a wonderful compliment, thanks so much. We love what we do and are so pleased that it shows. Actually we are expanding the Ocean Gate and soon it will be a 3 building, 3 pool family friendly resort. You'll still have the same great service, just on a larger scale! We hope you can come back again soon.

“"Good value for the money"”

Good value for the money. Not too impressed with the cleaning person. Wet dirty cleaning rag was left on the bathroom counter on two different days. The drinking cups provided were not washed on one of the days. The rest of the staff was personable and attentive. All in all a decent reasonably priced hotel.

“New, nice and good value for money!”

I spend one night in the Ocean Gate last week. My Queenroom was very tastefull and modern decorated. The hotel is quite new and it shows. Only thing is that you have to manage things yourself a bit. There is no reception and only about 6 hours a day (3hours during check in and 3 hours during check out) there is someone to help. I got a businesscard from employee Maggie but she didn't respond on her email or my texts. If you have questions (for example about later check out) it's better to ask it all during check in. In my case there was Yvonne (the cleaninglady who's there most of the time and in my opinion she solves most of the 'problems' an answers most of the guests questions while she is there. She was really helpfull and kind.

Location is in the middle of a classy neighbourhood hear the sea, but not much activity in near surroundings. You definately need a car.

Karlijntje,
What a nice title to your review. You're right, The Ocean Gate is new and a good value, especially since it's just three minutes from the beach. We're expanding the hotel, and the two buildings across the street will soon be part of a larger Ocean Gate. You'll see more more of the modern & tasteful decor you mentioned...and a lot more staff. Thanks for staying with us!

“mixed pros and cons”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 January 2012

1. Check in took 45 minutes because because we did not know that there is no office at this facility, and we were not provided with instructions regarding the check-in location even though the staff knew we were arriving in the evening.
2. If you decide to stay here, make sure the staff know you want to stay at the Ocean Gate (we inquired via the website but they stated that they did not know we had wanted to stay at the Ocean Gate- they own multiple hotels).
3. Bring a print-out of your credit card bill to prove that you paid at the time of reservation because we were asked for our credit card upon check-in and asked to sign a form agreeing to pay the room rate, even though it had been paid months ahead.
4. Be aware that the windows do not have screens (I prefer to sleep with the windows open when it's not too hot, and strongly dislike having the air conditioner running all night).
5. Be aware that smoking is permitted around the pool area, and all rooms are immediately adjacent to the pool area.
6. Breakfast is no longer being served, in case this is important to you.
Pros: easy 2 block walk to the beach, clean rooms, comfortable bed.

Room Tip: no elevator to 2nd floor rooms

“Nice on the surface”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 January 2012

We chose this hotel for one night. On the surface, the Ocean Gate Hotel is quite nice. The rooms are refurbished - spotlessly clean tile floors, two luxurious queen beds, contemporary style, modern kitchenette with eat-in dining (microwave, fridge, stove, toaster, coffeemaker). There is a fabulous amount of closet space (wow!) and the floor to ceiling mirror is a dream. The pool is as pictured and my family enjoyed it immensely. And, it is very close to malls, the beach, shopping and cafes.

It is clear that the staff take pride in their work but we had several major issues, which is why I've given this hotel a 'poor' rating. For one, there was almost no water pressure in the bathroom shower and we had to squat and take a container to catch the water from the tap and pour it over us while standing. That's when we noticed that the water coming out of the pipes was yellow! We also noticed that the bathroom had been painted over - even the tiles on the wall and the bathtub itself. And the paint (not surprisingly) is peeling. That was a complete turnoff. The bathroom is also very small. As well, there are lights outside the rooms that turn on at dusk and turn off at about 5am. And, the venetian blinds let in all that ambient light and it was very difficult to sleep well. I told the manager and she said that black-out curtains are on order.

Unfortunately, we had a "visitor" that came into our room at breakfast time. We have been traveling for months and stayed at dozens of hotels; but this is the first time I have ever seen a cockroach in a hotel room. The staff were very professional; the manager came over to console us personally and she saw the insect first-hand and disposed of it. But, that was the final straw for this hotel, despite all the positive things.

MarainTO,
Thank you for your feedback. We always appreciate hearing from our guests. Your are right; we are very committed to our guests and do take pride on our work. Which is why we were especially sorry to hear that you had some problems. We haven't received any complaints about the water pressure in your specific room before, but we will look into asap. Regarding your "visitor" - we are very sad that you had to run into a Palmetto bug during your stayt. While they are not a cleanliness issue they can sometimes be a nuisance...we Floridians know them very well.

Please let us make it up to you. Please come again and we will upgrade you to a junior suite!

Thanks, NBV
