I was apprehensive after reading some of the reviews, but we wanted something with a kitchen and close to the beach and this place had that. This is a family owned small place probably built in the 50's, so yes it is a little worn. The owners were very nice and the maid did her job well. The place was clean and yes the appliances were older as were the furnishings, but you can't beat the location and for the price, it is well worth it. It is a really easy walk to the beach with lifeguards (which is great with kids). We go to Fort Lauderdale for the beach and the fun restaurants and this is close to everything we love about the area. The pool was also clean and we felt very safe there. I would recommend bringing your own towels from home, if possible. My only complaints was that there were no kitchen towels or even paper towels or some soap to clean the dishes with, but I will bring those with me next time. We will come back here and yes I would recommend this place if you are looking for a comfortable, clean, safe place to lay your head. If you are looking for a Ritz Carlton, it is down the street.

“would not recommend”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 March 2009

The place was inexpensive but a disappointment: it was dirty, run-down and had many problems (electrical issues in the kitchen, very OLD applicances, inadequate dishes/cookware in the kitchen, uncomfortable bed, and a weak lock on door). It did not look as nice as the photos on the website.

It did however have a great location and a nice courtyard with an okay pool, which was its only saving grace.

“NIce, but......”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 February 2009

We were scheduled to arrive on Sunday, Feb 8. We booked through Travelocity and had our itinerary with us. We left Albany, NY at 8:30 in the morning, and arrived at the hotel around 1:00. No one was there and the office was closed! Some of the other tenants saw us and showed us an emergency number we could call. We called and explained we were there to check in, and the manager said "do you have reservations?" to which we replied "Yes" and he said "Are you sure?" You can imagine our dismay. He told us he would be there in one hour, and could we wait. Since we hadn't had lunch, we agreed (although we would have liked to have checked in and changed from our winter clothes to more appropriate attire). We went to a nearby restaurant, ate lunch and returned about 1 hour and 15 minutes later. Still no manager, and the office is still locked. We sat by the pool (it is a good thing the weather was nice, or this could have been far worse) for another 30 minutes and called the Emergency number again. We asked if they were on their way (he had told us he only lived 20 minutes away) and they said yes. We waited another 20 minutes and called Travelocity. They placed us on hold and contacted the manager and came back to tell us he was only 2 blocks away.

The manager DID eventually show up, and we were finally showed to our room. As we went in, he turned on the light and the light bulb blew. He said he would replace it, but never did. The bedroom door would not shut since the hinges were on backwards. We had 3 plates, two cups, two pans for cooking (with no lids), and a few pieces of silverware. Not exactly a well stocked kitchen. No toaster, and the stove's largest burner did not work.

Although it was clean enough, the maid service leaves a lot to be desired. She would come and take our towels, but not leave new ones. When I went to the manager, he said that she had to wash them and would return them later. One day we never did get towels. We left a note asking for towels which did come the next day.

The pool was not always clean. It looked like the skimmer was only turned on some of the time. The air conditioner has seen better days, but did keep us cool. There was no tea pot or other container for making tea, coffee, etc.

On the positive side, there was plenty of hot water, but the toilet ran all the time. My husband actually fixed it while we were there. It was within walking distance to the beach which was nice. The free breakfast advertised is wrong but since you have a kitchenette, you can fix your own breakfast. There was free internet, which worked well. The television worked and had a lot of channels. The beds were comfortable. The maid did do a good job cleaning, but like I said, sometimes we didn't have towels. There was a grill that we used to cook a steak and we had a nice time sitting outside eating the steak and enjoying the sunshine.

We probably would not return there. Although it worked for us for this vacation and didn't cause us to have a good time, we didn't feel that the manager or the maid did quality work. We would have expected SOME type of apology or amends for having to wait over 2 hours just to check in, but the manager simply said "My English is not good". When I asked a question about a local shop I was referred to his daughter who spoke better English.

Oh yeah -- the photos must have been enhanced. It really doesn't look like this at all. We tried to figure out how they GOT this picture, but we still aren't sure.

“Nice quiet place to stay.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 June 2008

This is a nice cheap place to stay in Fort Lauderdale. I say cheap meaning the cost was just right. I went down to Fort Lauderdale with three other friends. The hotels has apartments. The owners and the family live at the place. The beach is only two blocks away. There is a kitchen where they have utensils and cooking pans. The owner was sweet enough to let us us their massive gas grill to bbq some steak one night. If I were going to stay in Fort Lauderdale I would stay there again. The maid comes daily. and cleans the place up. The one and only issue we had was having to go and ask for towels because the maid hadn't cleaned yet. Other then that they let us have friends over in the pool until 4 in the morning. They were very accomodating. The owner even offered to go to the liqour store for us so we didn't have to walk. I would recommend this place.

“Don't complain about not getting what you don't pay for”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 January 2007

A group of 11 of us stayed at the Princess Ann Apartments in November for a long weekend. We found the hotel to be clean and adequate. The owners were friendly and most helpful in providing additional towels, kitchen utensils (okay, it was a corkscrew for the wine) and anything else we needed. We enjoyed the pool and spent some time lounging on the pool deck.

I think you need realistic expectations, based heavily on what you are paying. The Sheraton is down the street, but you'll pay a lot more to be there. I rated our stay above average. I don't want to discourage anyone, I think BASED ON THE PRICE and the AGE of the facility, our overall experience was above average. Clearly, if you want to stay at a 4 or 5 star hotel, you'll never believe that the Princess Ann apartments were above average.

The previous review said something about the third floor and breakfast. The hotel is only two stories and I never paid for, saw any reference to or heard about breakfast. There are restaurants down the street and a bloody mary or mimosa is only a short walk around the corner.

TV??? Remote controls?? Do you really travel to South Florida to watch TV. Give me a break.... Yes, there was a TV in the room - it was functional and the remote worked fine, assuming you want to spend your vacation watching tv.

There were many restaurants and fun nightlife a short walk from the hotel. For a dollar, you could take the bus anywhere and there are plenty of cabs. The Elbo Room is south and there is fun Irish pub to the north. The beach is a short walk east.

Eleven of us thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Ask yourself what your expectations are before you complain!! If you need an ice machine instead of an ice cube tray in the freezer and a vending machine that sells toothbrushes, you need to stay elsewhere. There is a 7-11 a short walk away, just in case you need to buy that toothbrush.

We would return next week if we could. At the price, you can't beat it.

FYI - there is quite a bit of construction on the A1A in the area. Once the area is rehabbed and the new buildings are up, I would expect to see some price increases!
