I've just completed a 4 night stay at the Windamar Resort and I must say that in spite of what some of the other reviewers have shared, I thought it was just great and had a fantastic time.
The Windamar is a medium-sized (18 rooms) facility that might be getting a bit old, but is still rather nicely maintained. My room was always clean -- the staff was always friendly and helpful -- and the grounds were well kept. Yes, the lounge chairs could use a thorough cleaning or replacement, but that's to be expected considering the environment.
I didn't rent a car this visit, but that wasn't a problem for me. The ocean is only a block away and there are lots of restaurants and bars (even a store) within an easy 10 minute walking radius. Taxi service was about $25 each way to/from the Fort Lauderdale airport.
If you haven't been to a gay resort in Fort Lauderdale, be prepared for one really odd thing -- the resort has high-rise hotels and condo buildings with an unobstructed view of the resort. So while it's perfectly legal to be nude on the grounds of the resort, it's also perfectly legal for your neighbors to watch. Personally, I could not possibly care less who sees me in my birthday suit.
My only complaint has nothing to do with the resort, but with my next door neighbor. He sat in the chair immediately outside my door and chain-smoked and guzzled astounding amounts of beer virtually non-stop for the entire time I was there. Mind you, he has every right to do all three -- but you think he would have been a little more sensitive to the fact that he's so close to my private space, his stench is seeping into my room and his physical presence is interfering with other hotel guests stopping by my room to say a special "Hello."
Next time I'm in Fort Lauderdale, I'll make it a point to stay at the Windamar.
