This is the second year in a row that I stayed here. On the plus side the rooms are large, nicely furnished, and clean. The pool area is beautiful. The staff is generally friendly, although some are overly stuffy in their demeaner given that this is a 50 year old 2 story motel in a so so area of Lauderdale, not the Plaza in New York City! The beds are very hard, and the linens are lower grade than at a La Quinta. The big letdown on both stays was the total deadness of the facility. To me the point of staying at a gay hotel is to have social interaction around the pool area. When the hotel is dead there is no interaction..hence we may as well have stayed at a La Quinta, and paid about half the price for a similar quality experience. Last year the hotel was dead dead..the staff claimed they were fairly busy but it was an obvious lie. This year we called and asked how busy they were before agreeing to come there the same day (Friday). We were told they were 50% occupied, which would be about 15 rooms rented out. Upon arrival the place was again dead. Virtually no people around. Come nightfall it was really obvious that about 6-8 rooms were rented out...not even close to 50%. Saturday and Sunday night were dead as well. The few other people we talked to during our stay were dissapointed the deadness of the place...and were not pleased and/or amused about how the staff so obviously lies about occupancy of the hotel. I ask one of the cleaning people about it, and even they were very evasive about how few guests were staying there. For the record the Alacazar, Worthington, and Cabanas were sold out the same weekend. I doubt I chance the Schubert again. They have dug a hole for themselves by trying to charge so much that that the place is often semi-deserted, and that makes it no fun to stay there. They really need to get more realistic on the pricing vs. demand equation at various times of the year, and try to keep the place more occupied. It is a shame that such an overall nice place is ruined by the lack of guests.
