“This is a classic property, that i WANT to love....but it falls a bit short at times.”
Let me start by saying that i LOVE Hyatt, i really do. I have been a Diamond Gold Passport member for more than 10 years.....
I have probably stayed at this property 20 times in the same years.
I love the location, and love the history of this Fort Lauderdale Classic. Hyatt Pier 66 is located on the inter coastal, and surrounded by beautiful yachts that circle the property and fill the adjacent marina. Wow....
The hotel experienced some renovations in recent years, most recently of the lobby area. Unfortunately, the property really needs a 'head to toe' renovation to bring it completely up to par with 4 star resort properties, and to bring all areas of the hotel into aesthetic alignment. The front of the hotel is 'circa 1974', while the lobby tries to be a 'W" with clean, contemporary decor, and the tower rooms are more 'classic, conservative hyatt' from the '90's. The decor mix is quite varied....
Dont get me wrong, rooms are CLEAN and very comfortable. Period. I read a number of the poor reviews on this site and was SHOCKED by the crap some people say. Wow...this is a WONDERFUL property. It could, and should be a more STAGGERINGLY WONDERFUL property though. So much potential....
:)
The rooms are split into 2 categories. The tower rooms, and the 'motel' rooms that surround the property (2 level). All have been renovated, all are incredibly comfortable. I am almost always upgraded to the 'tower' but often ask for a poolside room. The tower has 3 elevators, and i have often found that when there is a function on the roof of the tower, elevators are insufficient to handle the crowds. The staff also uses these elevators, which only complicates the problem. I really dont like waiting 10 minutes or more for an elevator....repeatedly. :(
The rooms in the tower are a bit older than the others...but very comfortable, and well maintained. Great beds, great linens. Large rooms with large baths. The air conditioning sometimes seems to be a bit 'stressed' in some rooms. I imagine the 'plant' is older....
The 'motel' rooms are newer, and more contemporary with tile floors and rugs. I like them, especially when poolside.
Grounds are perfectly maintained. PERFECT. The garden areas are HUGE for a property with this number of rooms.. Nonetheless, the design/style/landscaping is a bit dated. The pool and pool deck is also huge...but could use some attention to bring into the realm of world class resort pools. Its a bit boring....and dated. Sorry, hyatt.
My last couple of stays were not so great. The elevator waits, and having to wait for my room to be made ready put me off. The breakfast in the lobby restaurant was really lacking in terms of service. Items were not well maintained on the buffet, and the staff was not up to par. :(
I have since tried the Hilton down the road (nicer renovation...but nothing that special). I also tried the "W' on the beach, the Westin, and the Ritz. I loved all of them, and the Hyatt has probably lost me to the W and the Ritz.
I hate that, because i really do love Hyatt. Maybe someone will decide to once again make this property the jewel of Ft. Lauderdale as it once was. Its still awfully darn nice, but faces some really tough competition from newer players.
:)
Room Tip: Tower rooms offer views, and more traditional furnishings. Rooms in the motel wings are newer, and...
