If you want a convenient home base for visiting the Everglades National Park or going into the upper keys, Florida City is most certainly the best location. Unfortunately, there are not many decent places to choose from. Holiday Inn Express is probably one of the better choices from our research.

The exterior, lobby, breakfast area and pool are well maintained and are what you would expect at a mid range hotel. However, the guest halls and guest rooms are long and narrow with high ceilings with very little decor making you feel like you are in an "institution".

Our room was clean and did not look worn. However, it was not a comfortable room to be in. It was very "stark". We would have gone crazy in it if our stay was longer than the 2 nights we had planned. Also, the lighting in the room is VERY poor. If someone was staying there on business, it would be very hard to get enough light in the room to relax and read a book or newspaper after work or to do work on the computer.

After the first day of "free breakfast" we elected to go out for breakfast and pay for it so we could enjoy it. The basics of cereral, milk, yogurt and fruit were OK, but muffins were hard as rocks and the omelettes and biscuits / sausage gravy were barely warm no less "hot".

We are used to breakfast at Residence Inns / Homewood Suites / Hampton Inn / Hilton Garden Inn. They FAR surpass Holiday Inn Express if what we experienced is typical of the chain.

If the room rate was under $100, maybe the overall stay would have been "ok", but at over $100, it was overpriced for what it offers.

This is a typical Holiday Inn hotel which is good as you know what to expect. Very clean, staff very helpful and there is hot coffee and cookies available in lounge area all day long - which is a nice touch. Breakfasts are buffet style but have hot as well as cold food. Excellent location when travelling in the South of Florida, we were travelling up from the Keys and visiting the Everglades and this was very close to the airboat rides as well as the motorway.

We enjoy visiting the Everglades as we travel to the Keys and this is the best hotel in the area and the highest cost. As others have stated, it is not in the nicest neighborhood but has a high fence with only one entrance/exit so safety was not a concern. We did take valuables to the room for overnight. Rooms are comfortable and clean, breakfast was very good - except the waffle maker was not working the 2 mornings we were there. Husband very disappointed! Will stay again as it is the best looking hotel/motel in the area.

We stayed here one night before heading down to Key West. Great location, convenient to restaurants, etc. Not the greatest neighborhood, but not the worst. Breakfast buffett was good. Would recommend for a quick, overnight stay.
