We stayed in a co-ed dorm room for two nights, then later stayed in our tent outside. It's friendly, well run, has a great kitchen, coin washer and dryer and two computers to get online. Great common areas on the extensive grounds where you can read a book or meet other travelers with ease. A woman we met there brought her family to the hostel one year for Christmas rather than doing the usual gift giving. Her grandchildren had a great time and the adults felt comfortable letting them roam (see photos of the grounds and you will get the picture).
It's close to the east Everglades park entrance, but this is much cheaper than hotels in South Florida, which start at around $100/night during the high season. If you are heading into the park, Florida City is the closest place to find laundry, a post office, groceries and gas... so plan ahead!
The hostel tends to be quiet during the day and then ramps up (talking, laughter, music, traffic) later in the afternoon and well into the night. Make sure to bring earplugs if you want to go to sleep anytime before midnight.
