I'll start this review by noting that my husband and I lived in Destin for about 2 years, on Holiday Isle. We are familiar with the area, and in fact, always thought these rentals were adorable (from the outside) when we used to live in Destin.
We were excited to find this rental online for a great rate over Labor Day weekend. Well, the deal turned out to be too good to be true. The unit we were in - 12A - was run-down, outdated and dirty. Getting into the unit was a challenge. The entry door to the two units constantly got stuck because of the humidity. I often couldn't force it open and had to have my husband kick it open.
Then, once inside, the carpet on the steps was stained and dirty. There were two bunk beds at the top of the stairs. One of them had paint/veneer chipped off if it. The air return vent above the top bunk was absolutely disgusting. I don't think it had been cleaned in several years. The amount of dust hanging off of it almost made me gag.
The kitchen/living room area wasn't much better. The couch has stains all over it and the throw pillows were matted down from use and were pretty grimy. The kitchen cabinets had been sponge painted with a palm tree design (so 1980s), and again, the paint/veneer was chipping off the cabinets. There was a fridge, stove, microwave, toaster and blender, but no dishwasher. We didn't use the stove, but did use the toaster one morning. It couldn't even get hot enough to heat up a toaster pastry. Also, the glasses and dinnerware were mismatched. You'd be lucky to have enough pieces to serve 4 people.
On to the bedroom. This unit had a full bed. The dust ruffle was ripped. The coverlet was thin and grimy. The pillows had no loft. Our first night's sleep was awful. I called the ResortQuest office the next day and asked them to give us new pillows, which they did. If you have stuff you need to hang up, bring your own hangers. There was only one in the storage unit.
The bathroom had a stand-up shower, but no tub. Also, there wasn't enough storage space in the shower to accommodate shower items for 2 adults, unless you wanted your stuff sitting on the shower floor. The toilet paper holder was broken; a real pain in the rear when your roll of toilet paper gets knocked off in the middle of the night and goes rolling across the floor! There was no soap dish on the sink, so when you set the hand soap down, it was virtually glued to the counter top. The mirror had a wooden/particle board ledge which was peeling because of all of the wet items that had been placed on it.
Our unit had a balcony with white plastic patio furniture. The furniture was so grimy, though, that we couldn't bring ourselves to even sit in it. There was a vinyl canopy above the unit that hadn't been cleaned in years. It was covered on the underside in mildew and grime.
The pluses for this unit is that it's very close to public beach access. About a 2-3 minute walk. It's also just down the street from Destin Commons, the area shopping mall. The pool on the facility was small, but decent. The pool furniture was a bit ratty, but not nearly as bad as what was on the balcony of our unit.
It looked like some of the other units in this complex were nicer than ours. We might check those out another time, but will definitely not stay in unit 12A again or recommend it to anyone else.
