This was our first trip to this resort. I am not big on resorts. I do not like big crowds, elevators, waiting in line for everything etc., but this wasnt the case at the Pelican. We went off season, September 15th, and I decided I will never go earlier than September ever again! As far as the resort, I enjoyed it. It was very clean, the lobby and around the elevators never got too wet. The elevators went pretty fast and seemed to be in good working condition. I counted, it only took 14 seconds to get from the ground level to the 10th floor. The rooms were nice, but weren't as well stocked as it would have been if we would have rented from a private party. No salt or pepper, no coffee filters and little things like that. There were however, two packs of dish washing detergent, soap in th bathrooms, eating utensils, a coffee pot and coffee and those basics. There was an iron there as well. If you get a one bedroom, there are no washer and dryers. They are in the hallway and cost $1 in quarters a piece.
We ate at the cafe in the resort and had pizza. It was good, but my brother in law went down there around 4:00 to get some stuff and it was closed? I dont know their hours, I didnt see them posted. The pool area was good, but the pool is very cold due to its location. It is located on the side on the resort, not on the beach, and by 2:00 we lost the sunlight at the pool. There is a large sun deck though and it stays sunny. There was a tiki bar located in between the pool and the beach. From the 10th floor it probably took me 3 minutes to get to the beach from our room.
The location is good, kind of in the middle of everything in Destin. About 5 minutes from the Destin Commons. One thing, especially if you go during peak season, HWY98 is very conjested with traffic. Speaking of peak season, you will really need to rent beach chairs. It is $22 a day for two chairs and umbrella. Because the beach area is so little they line the chairs up all along the ocean in a couple of rows. The first two days was ok, but on the third day we rented chairs just so we could see the ocean when we layed out.
All in all it was a good stay. I would recomment this place. I just loved that although very nice, it didn't have that big "resort" feel. It was very relaxing and very at home. I'm sure we will be back.
