“Spring Training”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 February 2010

My son and I stayed there for it's close proximity to Yankees Spring Training in Tampa, and the Clearwater Beach. The front desk clerks couldn't have been any better. The free continental breakfast was good and enjoyed by many of the guests. The pool is small and did not have many lounges or chairs. That's about my only slight complaint. The lobby has two computers for internet usage. Some of the people monopolized the computers rather than letting others use them. The location isn't bad either. There are some restaurants within easy walking distance, and many more a short drive away. Rooms are clean, beds are comfortable, quiet, etc. My son and I had a very positive experience at the Fairfield Inn.

“Average Stay For One Night Only”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 December 2009

We stayed at the Fairfield one night while in town for the St. Petersburg Bowl. The hotel was full of other fans but was very quiet all night. The front desk staff were pleasant and even called a taxi for us to the stadium. They also had a breakfast but we got up too late for it.

The rooms were extremely plain. A bed, desk, and dresser with a TV. It was clean but smelled strongly of cleaning products. The bathroom was small but clean as well. The bed and pillows were very uncomfortable. We had friends that stayed in other rooms and they felt the same way too.

There are several restaurants right across the street but isn't close to much else. They did have a pool, jacuzzi, and fitness room but we did not use them. The hotel seemed well kept in general.

Overall, this hotel, because of it's price ($79 per night) was worth a one night stay. If you plan on staying longer I'd find some place that has more comfortable beds. I'd only recommend it for a quick night stay in town if you don't plan on being in the room much.

“The Marching Band Refused to Yield .........”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 December 2009

Selected the Fairfield on the basis of good reviews on Trip Advisor and because we had a $50 "smart bucks" voucher to redeem on a 2 night stay.

The Brazilian clerk checked us into room 312. The room was fine, if a little small, but right next to the lift and we feared noise. About 5 minutes after checking in we looked out of the window and saw a coach in the car park disgorging a party of teenagers. Our fears were realised 5 minutes later when the 3rd floor corridor was thronged with noisy and excitable youths of both sexes.

We battled our way through the mass and back downstairs to reception, not pleased that we appeared to have the worst room in the house. The clerk admitted that the party was booked in for 2 nights and that most of them had rooms on the 3rd floor.

He asked what he could do to make the situation right for us and offered to either move us to a less noisy floor or check us out. We chose to check out, as we could only foresee a noisy evening ahead followed by an overcrowded breakfast experience the next day. 30 minutes after checking in we were back on the road.

Credit to the clerk for allowing us to check out without problems. But bad marks on him for not warning us beforehand and for checking us in to the 3rd floor in the first place, when he knew the place would be overrun by the teenagers. If we had checked in at a different time we would have been unaware of the situation until it was too late to do anything about it.

As we were leaving the teenagers were reboarding the bus, en route to a meal at the Golden Corral. The teacher in charge was concerned that we were checking out because of their behaviour and asked if any of them had been rude or offensive. We said no, they had been fine, but it wasn't the atmosphere we were looking for in the hotel. She understood and confided that another coachload was arriving the next day ! It turns out that they were a High School Marching Band, in town for a competition.

So - we never actually stayed at the Fairfield. Fromwhat little we saw, it looked clean and pleasant and we would have been happy to stay if it had not been overflowing with excitable teenagers.

On our way out, we felt sorry for the couples arriving to check in (the coach had left for the restaurant) who were blissfully unaware of the commotion that would greet them shortly.

Footnote : after leaving we drove to the nearby Homewood Suites to check their availability. Not only did they have their own Marching Band in residence, but they were practicing in the car park !! So we cut our losses with Ulmerton Road, drove across the causeway into Tampa and took 2 nights at the Doubletree Westshore instead.

A previous review mentioned that internet access was wired but no ethernet cables were available. We were given a cable on arrival and asked to sign a declaration that we would be debited $10 if we did not return it.

“A very average stay.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 November 2009

The rooms are standard Fairfield, though perhaps a bit larger than the rooms I normally see in the brand. Extremely convenient to the St Pete airport and the businesses that are in the small industrial park not too far away.

We had a late check-in (it was after 1 am) and the night clerk was very friendly. I wanted to prepare a bit for my customer meeting at 8 am the next day, but I couldn't get the Wi-Fi to work. Oh well, off to bed I went and set my alarm a bit early. The next morning, both my boss & I complained about the lack of Wi-Fi so that they could check on it, but were scolded by the desk clerk for not calling them to report it. Hello, it was nearly 2 am. I wanted to sleep...not bicker on the phone with tech support. She said she'd report the problem but since we weren't in the rooms to replicate it she couldn't promise that they would fix it. I still couldn't get it to work the next night, so I grabbed my laptop and headed to the lobby. Oddly enough, as soon as I walked out the door to my room, I had great signal. I thought it was because I was at the very end of the hotel (room 100) but after my boss had a few conversations with tech support he found out that the wifi is only for the lobby. They apparently have wired access in the rooms but they don't provide the cables. Who travels with an ethernet cable in this day and age? My old stand by in Durham, a La Quinta, only has wired access in some of the rooms (the wireless is a bit weak there) but at least they provide the cables! I found that if I sat on a specific part of my bed, I could get enough signal to surf the web (although slowly) but not nearly enough signal to keep my VPN up. So I sat in the lobby for a few hours to get some reporting finished.

Housekeeping was fine. No problems to report. I do hate how the bathroom door when open covers have the side of the bathtub. Just a pet peeve of mine.

Breakfast wasn't the best. The OJ tasted like Tang. I've had many a Fairfield breakfast and this was by far the worst OJ I've tasted. We headed to Starbucks one day instead.

There's nothing particularly wrong with this hotel other than the odd internet, but we'll probably try another hotel the next time I need to be down there. There are a ton of hotels up and down the Ulmerton stretch for similar money, so I'm betting I can get something nicer for the same price.
