“Great place, go here and see for yourself...”

We recently stayed at Shephard's in January of 2012. We were hesitant based on some of the negative reviews we saw, but decided to check it out and go elsewhere if it looked to be not so nice.
We checked in within an hour of our plane touching down in Tampa. We had booked the room online. It was a seamless check in, the "studio queen" room we reserved was ready for our arrival. self parking was easy and the room was perfect.
After a quick change and some time gawking at the open water of the gulf and channel outside our room after leaving a New England winter behind for a while, we were at the waterfront bar ordering a couple of beers, listening to live music, and literally watching the dolphins crest while swimming through the channel.
The staff was friendly and polite, the waterfront bar was great with decent food and very fair prices, room was very clean, new, nicer than expected. View was very nice from the 5th floor room we had, AC worked well, mid week breakfast buffet wasn't overly stocked, just basics, but priced right (maybe 7 bucks) and tasted good.
IF you''re expecting to be on the main beach, this is just off it on the channel, still great location with their own beach. We were there mid week January, but I could see where the "pool side" rooms could be loud during prime season with the band being so close, book a "tower" room off to the side to avoid this problem, or go to the party and enjoy yourself. Pool and hot tub were slightly dated, but clean and in good working order, no complaints at all.
We're in our mid 30's and thoroughly enjoyed the room and the rest that Shepherds had to offer, we will definitely return.

Room Tip: The queen rooms with private balcony's seem to the the best choice for quiet.

Our room was unclean with a large hairball on the floor next to the bed. It looked like someone had cleaned their hairbrush out. Not only could we hear the band playing into the early mornings but felt the entire room vibrate. At 4:00 we were woken up to an argument and foul language. We decided to leave and checked out around 5:00 a.m. with the argument and foul language ongoing. My husband had to find the car hisself because there was no valet parking as was indicated. My children have now been exposed to every foul word and an example of white trash.

Room Tip: Please choose another hotel.

“NOISEY noisey Noisey”

Ended up with this hotel through hotwire. If you like staying up late late night this place would be ok. Music on saturday went on till 2:00am, Then the room we had faced the pool and the back of room was above the bar/resturant and they kept making loud noises dropping empty kegs ect.Beds incredably lumpy . The room plan was good it had a front room and the the beds in separate room little kitchenette. Was mixed with the front desk personnel we were 1 for 3 one totally great 2 lousy. Oh it's Valet parking but if you want to leave say 8:30 in the morning you are going to hike to find your car.VERY SMALL BEACH.

Room Tip: I heard if your above 5th floor in the other part of hotel you might have a better nights sleep away...

“Great view.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

My husband and I took our 20 something kids here. It was perfect, we had beach and they had night life with no worries of leaving the property.

“Great Place for the Solo Traveler”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

I can't say enough about this place. I had some vacation time that I needed to quickly burn. I opted for a week in Florida and actually reserved everything the night before arrival, including my flight and this hotel stay. Traveling solo can be very adventurous and that's exactly how this trip was. I read about the property online here as well as on some other travel sites. I was concerned about some of the reviews mentioning loud music and noise, but nevertheless I decided to press on. Once I arrived, I could not have been happier. Noise wasn't a major factor for me... JJ in the restaurant bar was excellent when I popped in for lunch on my first day. He gave me several suggestions and ideas of places to check out, which I did during my stay. Overall; though, I would say my favorite part of this hotel is the Tiki Bar. I began each night there and met so many interesting people during the week. Even some that I'm hoping to keep in touch with. There were a number of locals hanging out, too, which I thought was cool. Everyone is very friendly and approachable. The buffet in the restaurant is incredible. It's a bit pricey by some standards, but you must check it out if you're able. Lexi was the bartender in the restaurant bar on my final night and she was great. I can't say that I have any complaints. Everything is nearby and if you fly in there's no reason to rent a car like I did. I didn't drive anywhere all week. I felt like beach access there is somewhat limited. I walked a few buildings down each morning. It's actually not a bad walk. I would stay here again. This place labels itself as an entertainment complex. It's not necessarily a bad place for families, but it's not like they're hiding anything as others have insinuated.
