“** BEWARE - HOTEL NOT AS DESCRIBED **”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

people found this review helpful

The marketing-overview presented by Wyndham Clearwater Garden for their property is egregiously misleading. I checked out a full day early, such was my disappointment with this hotel.

Simply put, the hotel is not as described...neither on various travel-booking website nor on the corporate home page for Wyndham itself.

If you read the reviews of this hotel on Travelocity, Yelp!, Booking.com, TripAdvisor, or similar sites, you will see multiple variations of the same complain, over and over: "This hotel is not as described".

Briefly:

1) LOCATION NOT AS DESCRIBED

The claim: The hotel is marketed as "beach front" and having "ocean views", and so forth.

The reality: The reality is that the hotel is on the bay inlet...and not on the beach. Period. It's a black and white issue with no shades of gray. The hotel simply is NOT on the beach. And ocean views are not possible when the property is NOT on the ocean.

2) FACILITIES NOT AS DESCRIBED

The most egregious claim: the hotel claims it has "our 24-hour gym and fitness center".

The reality: The "fitness center" is in fact a bare room, 10 feet by 10 feet, that contains the following three items: 1) a single old treadmill, 2) a single broken/non-functional recumbent bike, and 3) Four dumbbells. Yes, that's right, four. This is not a fitness center in any shape or form, it is a bare room with some remnants of a fitness center that should probably be thrown away.

3) INADEQUATE PARKING

Simply put, there is not enough parking for the hotel. Two nights in a row, we had to wait 30 - 60 minutes for a single parking space to become available (which usually only happened when one of the employees completed their shift and went home.

4) NUMEROUS NON-FUNCTIONAL ITEMS

The ice-machine on our floor was "out of order", as was the soda machine.
The hair-dryer in the room was non-functional.
The single table in the room had uneven legs, making it impossible to use.
The above fitness center contained three items, two of which were either broken or incomplete.

The hotel itself is reasonably clean and quiet, and were it being described remotely accurately, and priced remotely accurately, customers could make reasonably informed decisions for themselves.

But when our only source of information about a hotel is inaccurate, it removes from us, the customer, the ability to make an informed decision, because we have been misled about key, critical items.

When large numbers of users report the same basic problem with a hotel, and say it is being fundamentally misrepresented, it is incumbent on the hotel ownership to examine the situation and correct it, in my humble opinion. It is obviously not being corrected at the corporate level of the Wyndahm ownership.

I suspect many customers would be wiling to accept the actual level/quality of this hotel...were it being described honestly. But it is not. Numerous customers of this property have all said the same thing: "Boy, this was not what I was expecting."

That's not good.

Room Tip: Choose a room at another hotel. There are several on Clearwater Beach, at similar prices, but of va...

“Pros and cons -- This is not "beach" front”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

This is a stepped-down Wyndham (with the "Garden" designation). Used to be Best Western and so it's now something between a real Wyndham and Best Western. There are upgraded features and not-so-much so. First, note that this is not on the open ocean/sea "beach" but it's rather on the channel leading from the Gulf of Mexico into the Clearwater Bay. The hotel's "beach" faces a bridge from Clearwater to St. Pete and it looks more like a lake or river beach than an ocean beach front. The hotel is fine and the bed is comfortable. I love the (fake) wood floor because I think it can be kept cleaner by the beach than carpet floor. The bar is great.

We planned our trip looking for a place with an excellent beach, great swimming and good service. We received a room with the most comfortable bead clean and well layed out .The cleaning service was excellent, the view of the beach , water and dolphins was wonderfull.the service that we received in the restaurant, patio bar and on the beach were excellent. Our stay was enhanced by the exceptional service given by two of the most pleasant, helpfull and cheerfull serving attendants which we would like them to be named.
Jose Barrios and his brother what a team.

“vacation from the cold”

great room, recently renovated it was everything my husband and i needed for the week. Bed was very comfortable, TV ok, beach front room on 6th floor is the way to go. Saw dolphins everyday in the water fron our balcony the beach was great, clean and soft. Nice beach chair are for rent by the day a bit expensive so I beached it on the towel or by the pool. Also no outside beverages can be consumed on their beach so if you are trying to save money you need to scoot over to the beach beyond the rocks. great shower never ending hot water, food was really good for breakfast , lunch and dinner. The housekeeping staff (Amanda) really was great room was emaculate each time we returned from the beach.Really everything went beyond our expectations. We will be back!

Room Tip: best beach view 6th floor.

“Beware of the scams”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2012

We stayed here during a bike trip around Florida. Clearwater was one of picks to stay so we could visit Winter the Dolphin. I don't have much to say that was good about this place. When I reserved the room I booked a King Harbor room that boasted a view of the harbor and the city. After we got our room keys we proceeded upstairs to a room on the backside of the hotel with a view of the street and the city. No harbor anywhere in site so I assumed they had made a mistake and we immediately went back down to the front desk. The guy at the front desk said that was the King Harbor room and there was no mistake. He said that was a common occurrence that people thought they actually had a view of some water but for another $20 we could get a beach view room. He told us he was explaining that all the time to irate guests that also booked the King Harbor room expecting a view of a harbor! What a joke. We begrudgingly spent the $20 to get the view we had expected. The room was run down and outdated. They don't even have flat panel televisions just old Television sets with very limited channels. The view was pleasant.
The food at the restaurant on site is good but overpriced and they automatically add an 18% gratuity but make no mention of that anywhere the the unsuspecting diner. When we checked in we were given a coupon for $6 two dinner entree's but when we tried to use that we were told that we had ordered sandwiches which were not part of the dinner menu thus we could not use the coupon.
The beach has no chairs. Well no chair that don't cost something. They have wooden loungers with cushions and an umbrella they call cabana's that you can rent for $25 a day or you can sit your butt in the sand all day.
We will definitely not be visiting here again. Everything we did seemed to have some kind of scam attached to it.
