We are currently staying at the Ron Jon cape Caribe Resort with our two children (a 2 yo and baby). It is a very nice resort and has been very clean. Something that is important to us since we spend so many hours on the floor with the baby and toddler. overall, we really like the resort but the location is just ok for us.
Our unit overlooks the pool area - we are in a 2 bedroom condo unit - the kitchen has everything we need - the only thing missing is plasticware - it would be great to have plastic plates and cups for eating outside. The master bedroom is huge and the living area is as well with a large patio outside. The pools are heated and have been warm - there are several options for us even with little kids - and we would love to return when they are older to enjoy the water slide - along with the movie theatre, arcade, game room, etc! If you have preteens this resort looks like a great place for them!
The playroom has been great for us - it is so nice to have an indoor option for the cooler days of January. Plus, no need for sunscreen inside! The walk to the beach is about 10 minutes via a paved sidewalk and street that leads to the ocean front condos. Chairs and umbrellas are available for rent. An umbrella was $5 all day.
My only complaint about the resort is that there is only one restaurant on site and they do not serve breakfast - the food is good, we've had carry out twice and dined in once. We like to eat out on vacation or order in...so this is limiting for our family. I know many people prefer to cook in their condos.
The staff has been very nice and friendly. No sales pressure whatsoever. The activites are abundant even during the slow time of January - there was a live animal show ($2ea), poker demonstration, bingo and more.
As far as the location is concerned - it was an easy drive from Orlando - less than an hour from the airport, no traffic. The resort is located in(?) the port of canaveral - so driving into the resort has an industrial feel. There isn't too much within walking/biking distance from here. The port has "the cove" which is several restaurants - from dive bar to upscale casual. There is a small weekday market to which we have not been. we walked from the resort to the pier thru Jetty Park - it was a paved walk, about 20 minutes to the pier and very pretty through the trees. Saw dolphins in the water - great luck! The facilities at the park looked nice - a snack bar, boardwalk, and playground.
Since the weather has been cooler (mid 60s) we went to the Brevard Zoo and NASA on 2 separate days. Both are about 25 minutes away by car. Great side trips if you are looking to leave the resort. I will review them separately. We went to Manatee Park - didn't see any manatees but it was a quick trip. we went to Cocoa Beach Pier - which leaves something to be desired - I think the whole area is sort of run down when comparing it to other places in Florida - I've been to both coasts, Tampa to Miami and Vero Beach to Ft. Lauderdale. That is why I say its an average location - it is central if you want to drive back to Orlando or to go to NASA (which is very impressive, I will return). But the beach and town of Cocoa are nothing great at all.
All this being said, I would return to Ron Jon's when my babies are older to take advantage of the great family resort here - and that it is so clean with large rooms.
Room Tip: Main building rooms have easy access to all the amenities other than the beach.
