We spent the week before Christmas at the Coconut Plantation - four children ages 11-16, one set of grandparents and my husband and I - We stayed in the two bed/two bath unit in the 3rd building. The rooms were very very nice - the only thing we called the main desk for was extra blankets for the kids - and the blankets arrived quickly - with a smile! Parking underneath the building was great as it kept us out of the hot sun - obviously more important for a visit in July - it was easy maneuvering even with a large Suburban. Luggage carts provided in the parking garage and there was an elevator to take you to your floor. The back Porch is huge - screened - with chairs to relax and table to eat at. My father in law would have lived out there if I would have let him. Comfortable - updated furniture - unit was clean and well stocked.
The pool area is gorgeous - just really quite beautiful! Several pools to choose from - one nice sized kiddie pool - a lap pool scheduled times for 'adults only', two great hot tubs - one a bit more secluded with a waterfall into it - the main area pools also had waterfalls into them - lots and lots of palms, stonework, thatched huts, palapa's - with hammocks (fell asleep in one, one day - a goal of mine - for several hours) and a more secluded area with thatched huts and chairs so people could have a quieter experience if they wanted. There was also a lazy river which was great - long ride - and plenty of tubes for everyone. We were not fearful at all about allowing our kids to run around and explore all on their own - which was comforting. By the second day, we allowed our kids to go back and forth from the room to the pools without worry or feeling as if we had to go with them. There are plenty of bathrooms, bar areas, pool and ping pong tables - sand volleyball - basketball area...hmmmm also a game room that my kids spent plenty of time at and a work out center that had some wonderful equipment and overlooked the lap pool. There is a "Provisions" store on site that you can pick up milk, bread etc - but very pricey - we hit up the WalMart (about 8 miles away) and several closer Publix Supermarkets for groceries and were good to go for the week.
There is a "Trolly" - or van service to the "Hotel" which is another Hyatt property about a quarter mile away - these shuttles run on regular hours (clockwork literally) and will take you the Coconut Hyatt 'Hotel' - we did this several days as the kids wanted to use the spiral slide that goes into their huge pool as well as the rock climbing wall - I was AMAZED at how gorgeous this property was as well. Marble stairways, huge fountains....just gorgeous - let me say that the first time we pulled up there was a Rolls Royce under the awning - so, you can take it from there! There is no "on site" beach - but the Plantation does have a private beach that they will 'boat' you to, again - regular hours (clockwork) all day - just check the schedule - oh, and the boat ride is a very easy 10minutes at most - the beach area was crowded (even in late December) but had good facilities - we stayed about an hour and caught one of the regular "shuttles" back to the main facility - easy enough and no stress.
There is a huge mall very close to the resort as well - just monsterous. If my kids were a bit older I might have considered dropping them off and picking them up several hours later...lots of stores - and it is set up as an 'outside' mall rather than enclosed. Plenty of places to eat - shop if that is your thing. My husband took a fishing trip one day and when he came back and filleted the catch we took it straight to a local restaurant and they 'cooked' it up for us we had a fish feast! ((now that is fresh!!))
Oh - there is also a bald-headed eagles nest on site - if you have never seen one in "real life" you have to check it out - huge! Like a four-man tent in a tree - the eagles were both on site and if you were lucky enough to catch them flying it was beautiful.
I would come back to this property in a heartbeat - especially in the winter months when it is not as crowded yet the weather is still nice enough to swim - my kids loved it, my in-laws loved it and my husband and I loved it!
