I arrived at the Hilton Garden Inn at about 9 pm. The first of many problems came up immediately:
1. Check-in went smoothly enough. I was told that my room had a Sleep Number bed, which I was very much looking forward to. But I had more luggage than I could handle by myself, and the check-in girl didn't bother to ask me if I'd like help with it. And there was nobody anywhere to ask except the check-in girl who was now busy on the phone. So I went back and forth from the desk to the elevator and back moving my luggage on my own.
2. When I got to the 3rd floor, since there was only one elevator, I had to again go back and forth with my luggage all the way down a long corridor.
3. I have slept in Sleep Number beds, this one was certainly not one, and it was very hard. I could not fall asleep despite how tired I was. After much tossing and turning, I decided to call the desk and discovered that the telephone on the nightstand did not work!
4. At around 4 or 5 am, in desperation, I tried the telephone on the desk, and it did work. I called the front desk, and was told that the dial was under the sheet on the side of the bed. It was not a Sleep Number bed; it was a Sleep Number imitation bed. Nobody had bothered to instruct me in the use of the bed. Not sleeping most of the night made for a very difficult next day.
5. When I went to sleep at about 5:30 am, I set the alarm for 8:30. However, I awoke on my own at 8:45; the alarm clock did not work!
6. I went out at 9:30 am, and returned at almost 2 pm, hoping to take care of some business, and possibly get in a nap. But, my room had not been made up yet. I called the desk, and they assured me that somebody would come right away. About 15 minutes later, a maid did come, and another 15 minutes later, the room was made up, and I finally did whatever I could before having to go out again.
7. Their only compensation to me was the offer of one free appetizer at their restaurant…
