“Falls short of Marriott expectations”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 November 2011

I stayed here for three nights while on business in the Wilmington area. For some reason, there wasn't many options to choose from when booking my hotel the week before the trip. I've had good experiences at other Marriott Fairfield Inns, so I figured this hotel would be a decent option. Overall, it's OK, but certainly not up to my expectations of a Marriott.

I checked in relatively late at night and was given a room on the first floor. The room had a weird smell, so I went back to ask for a different one, but I was told they were completely booked.

Pros:
-The complimentary breakfast buffet is good and substantial. Lots of hot and cold options.
-Property is located near shopping and restaurants. Easy access to the freeway.

Cons:
- It's a motel style property with exterior halls ways on the first two floors (but interior hallways on the third. Kind of weird).
-The rooms are very small. I guess it's standard for this kind of hotel, but the bathroom is so small that door just about touches the toilet when you open it.
-The exercise room was also tiny. There was four older cardio machines in a windowless room. There wasn't even enough room for stretching. At least there was a TV.

This property meets my minimum expectations for a hotel, but certainly not somewhere I would chose to stay or recommend.

“Great Stay!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 November 2011

On a budget, we booked this hotel 2 weekends in a row for my daughters cheerleading competitions in delaware. When I read the reviews of this hotel, I'm guessing these are people who normally stay in expensive hotels, I guess because they see Marriott. Well I got an extremely good deal on both stays from one of the discount hotel websites and let me say, for the price I paid I was extremely happy with both of our rooms. The first night we stayed in a motel style room and the 2nd time up on the 3rd floor hotel type. Yes the rooms were very small, and you do hear noise from 95 but the room and bathroom was clean, beds were very comfortable, everything smelled nice unlike many hotels I've stayed in, they had nice decor, there was an exercise room on the 3rd floor and my daughter and I were very pleased with the breakfast. Some hotels only offer bread items, but they had things like yogurt, boiled eggs, bacon egg and cheese sandwiches, a waffle maker and alot more....they had coffee, juice and milk to drink. The other reviewers must be really picky, so if are used to higher end hotels then maybe this is not the place for you, otherwise I would highly recommend. My daughter has another competition in de coming up soon and I am definitely going to try to stay here again. Oh and there isn't much in the immediate area (the hotel clerk couldn't even tell me the closest fast food restaurant) however Christiana Mall is less then a 5 minute drive. We went there both of our stays and ate dinner and walked around the mall. And even though there was noise, I loved that it was right on 95 so we could jump right on it and head to the competition.

“This property should NOT be a Fairfield Inn”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 October 2011

This property had a former life as a motel. Someone thought it would be a good idea to do an extreme makeover and transform the property into something that it could never be. I would imagine this was done due to the proximity of the Courtyard by Marriott next door as to not have a no-tell motel next to the Courtyard.

This is my second stay at a Fairfield Inn, once for personal travel and this time for work. In comparing the two properties, there is no comparison. This property has outdoor entry for two of three floors, and interior entry on the 3rd floor. ?!?! Outdoor corridors at a Marriott Property? I could understand this if I were at the beach or another popular tourist destination. But in Wilmington, DE? REALLY?

The property's proximity to the highway is evidenced as soon as you walk into your room and discover that the volume doesn't change much once the door is closed behind you. The room is so loud that even the TV doesn't cover up the road noise. I practically live on the road for work, and the last thing I want to do it sleep... ON the highway.

The rooms are very very very small - I had a king bed room, I can't imagine what near nothing amount of floor space is in the two bed rooms. The bathroom is split (in the grand style of motels - like Econo-Lodge - or Red Roof Inn) The sink is in the room, and the toilet and shower are in a very very very very tiny closet. The bathroom doesn't even have a standard size door - it's all of about 2 feet wide (or less).

The rooms still have tube televisions, and they offer a tiny desk by the front door - right next to the heat/ac unit - don't event think about trying to get paperwork done at the desk - it will blow everywhere!

The outside walkways are very very narrow - when the housekeeping carts are out and about, forget about getting your luggage through! And in regard to housekeeping - they are very LOUD - pounding on doors, slamming doors. The walls are paper-thin as you can hear everything above, below, beside, and even under you. Even someone running water in adjacent room sounds like Niagara Falls.

I stood at the front desk for at least 45 seconds before the TWO employees standing at the desk even acknowledged my existence - and I was the ONLY person in the lobby area. Being that it was after 11:00pm - I wasn't in the mood to be ignored.... less than 3 feet away from them. Check In was very awkward, and when I was handed the key that was it! No instruction on where to find my room, where to park, what time breakfast was served, and no Thank You, no good night, and most certainly no offer "Would you like a wake up call?" For crying out loud, I checked into a MARRIOTT??!?!?!?!?!?!

This hotel in no way shape, form, or fashion should have the Marriott name attached to it. I appreciate the fact that it was clean, and cosmetically in order. But I'm not about to take a pig to the Clinique Counter at Macy's.This place is a pig with expensive lipstick.

There was also really nasty looking stain on the curtain - really unacceptable.

Being new to Marriott, I will definitely reconsider any future stays before making reservations. If this property somehow slipped through corporate approval, I'd hate to think what else is out there!

This property isn't really even 'OK' for a one night stay due to the constant noise from the highway, and other rooms surrounding. If you are easily disturbed while sleeping, you need to avoid this property. While some would say just wear ear plugs! I say, I'm not paying $100 a night to sleep with ear plugs and risk not hearing the alarm clock in the morning.

Also, if you are handicapped - there is only one ramped curb that I could find to enter the property - I don't like dragging my luggage up over a curb as it quickly ruins it, so I had to walk from one end of the building to the other to find a ramp.

All around it is a disappointing property - I really expect more from Marriott. I have stayed with the Hilton family of hotels for nearly 5 years now, and while Hilton's standards are slipping, they would not put their name on this property.

This property is on my avoid list for sure!

Room Tip: Hope for the 3rd floor with interior corridors.

“Time for a makeover”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 October 2011

We've stayed here occasionally on our way south. Seems like everytime we stay, the property gets a little more worn. Rooms are very small and the din from I95 can get annoying if you are in the wrong room. Breakfast is typical for a Farifield Inn, not great but ok. The breakfast room is very small and hard to get around. This is an older property with access to the rooms from the outside except for the third floor that has an interior corridor. Looked out the window to see what the weather looked like and found two windows cloudy and white. Staff was nice and the room was clean. Time for a makeover.
PS
If you have a Garmin, it will try and have you use a road that no longer exists. You need to go into the shopping center by Cheeseburger in Paridise.

Room Tip: ask for a quiet room on the third floor away from the highway.

“Clean, comfortable, reasonable. What more could you want?”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 October 2011

It was during the week and apparently hotels in this area are full. We found that the Hilton was overbooked, Country Inn & Suites across the street was full, Courtyard by Marriott had no vacancy, and luckily we got the last king size bed ($89 plus tax) from a choice of 2 rooms the other being a double on the third floor.

Moral of the story? If you are looking to overnight in this area during the week, it is best to have a reservation.

The room 103 is on the first floor. This hotel has outside corridors for the first and second floor. There is an inside corridor for the third floor.

Breakfast in the morning was included. Biscuit sandwiches, waffles, bagels, pastries, fruit....something for everyone.
