This property had a former life as a motel. Someone thought it would be a good idea to do an extreme makeover and transform the property into something that it could never be. I would imagine this was done due to the proximity of the Courtyard by Marriott next door as to not have a no-tell motel next to the Courtyard.
This is my second stay at a Fairfield Inn, once for personal travel and this time for work. In comparing the two properties, there is no comparison. This property has outdoor entry for two of three floors, and interior entry on the 3rd floor. ?!?! Outdoor corridors at a Marriott Property? I could understand this if I were at the beach or another popular tourist destination. But in Wilmington, DE? REALLY?
The property's proximity to the highway is evidenced as soon as you walk into your room and discover that the volume doesn't change much once the door is closed behind you. The room is so loud that even the TV doesn't cover up the road noise. I practically live on the road for work, and the last thing I want to do it sleep... ON the highway.
The rooms are very very very small - I had a king bed room, I can't imagine what near nothing amount of floor space is in the two bed rooms. The bathroom is split (in the grand style of motels - like Econo-Lodge - or Red Roof Inn) The sink is in the room, and the toilet and shower are in a very very very very tiny closet. The bathroom doesn't even have a standard size door - it's all of about 2 feet wide (or less).
The rooms still have tube televisions, and they offer a tiny desk by the front door - right next to the heat/ac unit - don't event think about trying to get paperwork done at the desk - it will blow everywhere!
The outside walkways are very very narrow - when the housekeeping carts are out and about, forget about getting your luggage through! And in regard to housekeeping - they are very LOUD - pounding on doors, slamming doors. The walls are paper-thin as you can hear everything above, below, beside, and even under you. Even someone running water in adjacent room sounds like Niagara Falls.
I stood at the front desk for at least 45 seconds before the TWO employees standing at the desk even acknowledged my existence - and I was the ONLY person in the lobby area. Being that it was after 11:00pm - I wasn't in the mood to be ignored.... less than 3 feet away from them. Check In was very awkward, and when I was handed the key that was it! No instruction on where to find my room, where to park, what time breakfast was served, and no Thank You, no good night, and most certainly no offer "Would you like a wake up call?" For crying out loud, I checked into a MARRIOTT??!?!?!?!?!?!
This hotel in no way shape, form, or fashion should have the Marriott name attached to it. I appreciate the fact that it was clean, and cosmetically in order. But I'm not about to take a pig to the Clinique Counter at Macy's.This place is a pig with expensive lipstick.
There was also really nasty looking stain on the curtain - really unacceptable.
Being new to Marriott, I will definitely reconsider any future stays before making reservations. If this property somehow slipped through corporate approval, I'd hate to think what else is out there!
This property isn't really even 'OK' for a one night stay due to the constant noise from the highway, and other rooms surrounding. If you are easily disturbed while sleeping, you need to avoid this property. While some would say just wear ear plugs! I say, I'm not paying $100 a night to sleep with ear plugs and risk not hearing the alarm clock in the morning.
Also, if you are handicapped - there is only one ramped curb that I could find to enter the property - I don't like dragging my luggage up over a curb as it quickly ruins it, so I had to walk from one end of the building to the other to find a ramp.
All around it is a disappointing property - I really expect more from Marriott. I have stayed with the Hilton family of hotels for nearly 5 years now, and while Hilton's standards are slipping, they would not put their name on this property.
This property is on my avoid list for sure!
Room Tip: Hope for the 3rd floor with interior corridors.
