Residence Inn is an interesting brand, as it varies so greatly. On one end of the spectrum you have the new contemporary style, such as north of Dulles, and on the far *other* end of the spectrum falls this location. This is an old style, traditional property that has a lot of potential but falls way short.
First the pros - there is a great staff at this location. I've noticed this all three times I've stayed here. I usually don't have any great demands, but for instance, when I was ripped off by the washing machine, the girl at the front desk was extremely apologetic and refunded my money without me asking. Small, but it's the small things, right? Also, I think this is a great location. Other than the creepy, decrepit, abandoned "resort" just up the street, the area generally feels safe. I went on a 3 mile out and back run from the hotel and felt safe (I am a 34yo male with an extremely non-scary presence.) Also what I like about it is that despite the fact that its 'feet' away from an interstate, I heard no highway noise at all. I should disclaim that I didn't have a highway facing room - but I still felt the place was generally quiet.
I stayed here two years ago and they had horrible beds. Amongst the worst I've ever slept in. So when I found the same crappy beds here two years later, I was seriously bummed. If your chiro is prescribing a pool-table slate for your back, you'll be in heaven. But most people would find them --way-- too firm. It did not keep me from getting a *somewhat* decent sleep, but was far from comfortable for lounging around and watching the olympics late at night.
Food quality at the "gatehouse" is never something that's going to really impress a foodie, or even someone who has been to a decent restaurant ever, but this location seems to have really focused on spending the small bucks when it comes to institutional grub. This may not be important to a lot of people - didn't used to matter to me - but as time goes on, more often I find myself not wanting to go to yet another restaurant. When the food *looks* unappealing, its a total turnoff. Variety is totally lacking. I've been to some Residence Inns (even old style ones) that bend over backwards to make you *want* to eat there... this was far from it. Luckily there's a fantastic Indian joint in Windsor. Not a whole lot of other restaurant choices nearby though, so if your ideal location means a 'Thank Chili's It's Applebees' that you can walk to (and stumble from) steer clear of this place.
My other gripes are small, but add up. Dishwasher in the room seemed vintage 1984 and was damn near impossible to use. Bathroom trim looked nasty and needed overhauling. Fluorescent bulbs installed in fixtures attached to dimmers. Really? Not looking for mood lighting necessarily, but they were buzzing constantly. Televisions - tiny, and only 25 or so channels. Safety lock on door seemed like it was bolted on with quarter inch screws. Also, with all the room this place takes up, you'd think a workout room would be a no-brainer. Nope - you *can* go to the Gold's Gym a mile away, if that's your cup of tea, but it certainly isn't mine.
If the franchisee would re-invest in this property, I think it could really stand out. But until the beds are upgraded and some attention is paid to detail in the rooms, I'll be staying at the Hyatt Summerfield Suites 1 exit north.
