We had a little problem at check-in when we were put in a room with two doubles and no appliances when we had booked a two queen room with refrigerator and microwave. The second room had unknown body hair in the bathroom and probably had not been cleaned. The third room was fine, except for disturbingly spotted bedspreads, which we removed and had replaced the next morning. During these room switches, we ran into another couple who had been switched once but weren't satisfied with their new room as the AC was too loud. They asked us to listen, and we agreed it was noisy compared with ours. My advice: ask for what you want in your room until you get it. The staff is probably used to this. Once we were in a tolerably clean room with the facilities we'd paid for our stay was quite enjoyable.
Staff seems somewhat variable. You are in luck if Karen is at the front desk, other workers do not seem as able to understand and communicate, much less problem-solve. If you want your room made up, be judicial in your use of the "Do not Disturb" sign. One day our room was not made up, and (not Karen) the front desk clerk told me it was because I had the sign up. It does seem more like poor housekeeping management, since the room was vacant and the sign down several times during the morning and for most of the afternoon. Another day when our room didn't get made up I was lucky to run into the head of housekeeping in the elevator to make my request, and she was able to get it taken care of within a short time. When room was made up, the cleaning seemed thorough.
The beds were comfortable and the refrigerator somewhat large for a motel. The room AC was adequate, even though there was a heat wave outside. We enjoyed the exercise room, though there was only one treadmill, plus a stationary bicycle that was not plugged in and a bit the worse for wear. I read at the motel that guests are eligible for free passes to a nearby fitness center, but did not have time to check this out personally.
According to another guest, the sauna worked well, though I could barely believe my eyes when she used it in such hot weather. The pool is heated and there is no AC in that room. I saw staff testing the water periodically and it was quite pleasant to swim there, a largish clean pool that was not overly chlorinated. The hot tub was not functioning.
Breakfast was good: waffles, hard boiled eggs, toast, cereal, muffins, fruit, etc. Staff was very accommodating in that they let people hang out in the breakfast room after the end time of 10 am. They often checked in to be sure that we didn't want anything else before cleaning up. A buffet style dinner was served on Tuesday and Wednesday at no charge. There is also free wifi.
The location is conveniently nearby I-91 but removed enough to not get much traffic noise. It is set back from the Silas Deane Hwy., cutting down on traffic noise yet providing access to plenty of restaurants and shopping malls.
Overall, despite having to ask for the cleanliness standards that I'm used to, I enjoyed my stay and would stay again next time we visit Wethersfield. It is a good place to chill out while visiting my family, plus I get a discount and Choice hotel points.
