My wife and I stay here about once a year just to get away and relax for a night or so. I've reviewed this property before(see 2008 and 2010 reviews). This hotel is a waterfront resort on the Connecticut shoreline. It is comprised of connected buildings (main building if you will) with various types of accomodations from standard hotel rooms to suites. The hotel also has separate "townhouse" style units, many of which are also used for time share ownership. We stayed in a larger hotel room this time which had a king size bed which was comfortable(if not up to Hilton or Marriott bedding standards). The room also had a large sitting area, small flat screen TV and jacuzzi tub in the bathroom. The room appeared to be freshly painted as had the corridors. Carpeting in the room and corridors was older but still in decent condition. Overall, the room and bathroom were quite nice. Our stay was in January so prices were much lower than "in season" rates. We utilized the restaurant for a Saturday night dinner. The food and service were very good. Water's Edge is known for their elaborate Sunday morning brunch. Having eaten a large dinner on Saturday night, we decided to forego the brunch. Instead, we went to the restaurant at 8:15 AM for breakfast. Breakfast was open until about 8:45 when the staff finishes preparation for brunch. We were surprised that no menu was offered, just a limited buffet with standard breakfast foods. There was a chef to prepare eggs or an omelet. No waffles. A hotel of this caliber should offer a full breakfast to its guests who do not want to partake in the massive brunch. We then encountered a major problem. A container of yougurt I selected and partially ate from was rancid and long expired. I told the waiter. He didn't say much. When the check came about 15 minutes later, the manager walked over and said "don't worry about the check." While that was the apology offered, the real issue is that how can a hotel of this caliber serve expired yougurt? This hotel features weddings and functions, its restaurant and of course the Sunday brunch. Serving expired food casts doubt on the food handling, quality and preparation practices all around in my view. I mentioned the incident at the front desk at check out and again, not much was said except an inquiry whether the restaurant had "taken care of " the matter. One last item to note is that a new time share building has been constructed. This building partially obstructs the water views from some vantage points, particularly from the gazebo area often utilized for outside weddings. Some may feel this detracts from the overall atmosphere at a waterfront resort.
