I had read carefully through reviews of the Captain Stannard House. Although it is a lovely house, with a glorious back porch, the interior looks as if it were decorated in 1990. When we arrived, there was a note on the door, giving us directions on how to find our room. The door to that room was locked, and upon trying to turn the knob, we discovered that another party was occupying the room we had reserved weeks ahead of time. We all trotted downstairs and the owner told us he had put us in another room, since the other party had decided to extend their stay. Since one selects a particular room off a bed and breakfast website, we were unsettled. Our alternate room was clean, but shabby, as if no real attention had been given to the decor for years and years. It felt more like a motel, and a bit down at the heels one at that. But the bed was comfortable. Westbrook is attractive and we had a great dinner at a restaurant nearby. In the morning, however, we were disappointed with the breakfast. The "first course" was a canned pear with a bit of brown sugar on top and what tasted like store-bought quick bread." The "second course" was a bread pudding type dish with rashers of fatty bacon. I really wanted to eat eggs, and not a 2nd round of carbohydrates in my breakfast. There is a sense of pretension here, without any warmth or sense of decorum, any substance. So it feels like a sham. We went out for a walk at 9:30 am, never dreaming that anyone would enter our room before the check-out time of 11:00am. But upon our return at 10:15, we discovered the bed had been made up, presumably for the next guests? since our room reservation was for one night. We felt very uncomfortable with a violation of privacy. There are too many other bed and breakfasts to choose from to settle for such a place.
