“Nice but not worth the money”

The outside of the inn and main level are very nice and we loved the porch. Our room was a big disappointment though. Although spotlessly clean it lacked character, had funky carpet and just wasn't worth the money we'd paid. We've paid less for rather superior rooms in the past. Breakfasts were a big disappointment too and the lack of atmosphere made us want to leave. Strange combinations of food made the Dunkin Donuts across the road tempting (not really). Wouldn't take much to make it lovely but it's just not there.

“Wonderfully charming inn, owners and staff!”

I truly enjoyed a breakfast I recently had at this beautiful inn. While I had not stayed overnight here, I did tour several of the rooms of friends that stayed here and they could do nothing but rave about how wonderful their stay was and how accommodating Jim and Mary and their staff were. I experienced their warm nature and attentiveness first hand that morning at breakfast. The first course they served was a slice of scrumptious apple pound cake, followed by the main course, a maple walnut pain purdue and a link of sausage from fresh milk-fed pigs. Not only was the food delicious, but the service was superb! Both of the owners, Jim and Mary, as well as their other staff were extremely attentive and very nice; even as they cleared our empty plates with a smile. Part of our party was vegetarian and they made sure that they served a meal to them that accommodated their dietary needs. If you're looking for an immaculate and beautiful B&B with down to earth, friendly staff and owners and a place to truly relax, this is the B&B for you!

“My whole family & I are big fans!”

My family rented it out June 2010 & we had a great time. It's a charming inn & each beautiful room has its own personality. The gathering rooms were great for hanging out with family - enjoyed playing pool, doing puzzles & lazing on the couch chatting. My fave part was chilling out in the huge porch in the back. As for the service, Jim, Mary, Helen & their staff are the best! They were very friendly, attentive, helpful - service was personal. The food was to die for! Great breakfasts & yummy afternoon treats! My whole family had a great experience at Captain Stannard & would definitely come back.

“Wonderful”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 August 2011

Jim and Mary (and their daughter) were friendly and provided great service. They were accomodating to schedule changes (early check in) and seemed to thoroughly enjoy interacting with guests. The food was wonderful and the jigsaw puzzles were perfect for a rainy day. Overall the property was well kept with a beautiful porch and yard. There was water and soda available for guests at any time at no additional expense. The beds were super comfy and the linens smelled fresh and clean. The entire property (room included) was immaculate and you can tell Jim and Mary take pride in their establishment.

“A Sham---truly disappointing”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 August 2011

I had read carefully through reviews of the Captain Stannard House. Although it is a lovely house, with a glorious back porch, the interior looks as if it were decorated in 1990. When we arrived, there was a note on the door, giving us directions on how to find our room. The door to that room was locked, and upon trying to turn the knob, we discovered that another party was occupying the room we had reserved weeks ahead of time. We all trotted downstairs and the owner told us he had put us in another room, since the other party had decided to extend their stay. Since one selects a particular room off a bed and breakfast website, we were unsettled. Our alternate room was clean, but shabby, as if no real attention had been given to the decor for years and years. It felt more like a motel, and a bit down at the heels one at that. But the bed was comfortable. Westbrook is attractive and we had a great dinner at a restaurant nearby. In the morning, however, we were disappointed with the breakfast. The "first course" was a canned pear with a bit of brown sugar on top and what tasted like store-bought quick bread." The "second course" was a bread pudding type dish with rashers of fatty bacon. I really wanted to eat eggs, and not a 2nd round of carbohydrates in my breakfast. There is a sense of pretension here, without any warmth or sense of decorum, any substance. So it feels like a sham. We went out for a walk at 9:30 am, never dreaming that anyone would enter our room before the check-out time of 11:00am. But upon our return at 10:15, we discovered the bed had been made up, presumably for the next guests? since our room reservation was for one night. We felt very uncomfortable with a violation of privacy. There are too many other bed and breakfasts to choose from to settle for such a place.
