Our favorite village on the Connecticut shoreline is Stonington, an authentic jewel on the Long Island Sound that we have visited for more than 15 years and have longed to wake up in. This year, between holidays, we decided to make that dream come true. And a dream it was in this perfect charming small hotel. The Inn at Stonington is intimate, with rooms on only three floors, some with balconies and Sound view. All rooms are beautifully-appointed with lovely wall paper and furniture, comfortable beds and amazing bathrooms. Breakfasts are served in a ground-floor common room flooded with light and with fine vistas over the water. You are welcomed to linger over newspapers with coffee, juices, a fresh fruit bowl, hard-boiled eggs, an assortment of scones, fresh cranberry and nut breads, hot cinnamon buns, hot and cold cereals accented with nuts, cranberries and brown sugar. Despite the beauty of the inn, its location and the excellent breakfasts, the highlight of the Inn for us was the wonderful staff. They could not have been more welcoming and accommodating, providing us with in-town dining tips as well as excursions into the lovely countryside north of the village. We have already made our reservations for Stonington's annual holiday stroll, when the village shops open their doors with festive food and drink, following the lighting of the town tree. We expect many happy returns to Stonington and this fine inn.
